Extra? Shifter hole
What would have been here? Not the stomp starter hole.

Re: Extra? Shifter hole
Photos help but if the trans hump is off a 4000 series the kind of slotted hole to the right of the shifter hole is for the hand brake lever. if i is not to the right of the shifter it might be for some sort of two speed.

Re: Extra? Shifter hole
Could it be for a brownie shifter?
Back in the old days trucks often had two shifters - a main box plus an auxiliary box, or "brownie." When I learned to drive truck it was with a 5-and-4 transmission: 5-speed main box plus 4-speed brownie for a total of 20 forward gears.

Re: Extra? Shifter hole
If you've found the truck I had as a teenager the extra hole is for reverse. I installed a 4 speed Saginaw car transmission but I only had a three speed shifter for the top. I installed a separate rod to engage reverse by shifting into Neutral then pushing the rod down to get reverse.

Re: Extra? Shifter hole
I thought I posted a pic. It is a pop riveted patch. On s factory raised hump. I have no reason to believe trans has been changed. However a 283 has been installed. Along with the bellhousing.

Re: Extra? Shifter hole
Agreed.
I'm also noticing that someone took tie to try and make a decent looking patch, especially for a riveted piece. |

Re: Extra? Shifter hole
Apparently someone put hand brake on then it got removed? This fits with the theory of this truck having been a municipal or county truck. ..
Seems to have had a topper on it slot in gate for latch and pull handles welded to gate "Posts' on bumper made from jack hammer bits. Possibly to hold road cones. |

Re: Extra? Shifter hole
Those handbrakes were also on 47 3100's with 3 and 4 speeds. They didn't go to the foot brake until 48 on half and 3/4 ton.

Re: Extra? Shifter hole
The '49 3600 I used to have had a foot pedal parking brake. Both my '56 3600 and '58 36 Apache had the hand brakes.
