Another Neutral Safety Switch Question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi guys and gals,

I am in the middle of adding a 2005 5.3 and 4L60e to my 65 GMC Fleetside SWB. I am using the BP harness and Mounting the PCM in the cab. This truck had zero wiring in it as I bought it as a stalled project.
I purchased a universal steering column that does not have a neutral safety switch provision. I was reading here about just using the factory NSS on the trans for both NSS and reverse lights.

Can anyone verify that I can do this so I do not need to buy another steering column? I have modified the one I have and they will not take it back. Can you post pics, pin outs etc if this is possible please?

Yes its possible to use it, I generally do. You will need a starter relay to use it though because the switch cant handle the amount of power that would go through it during cranking. I dont have the schematic with me at the moment but I know I've posted it recently in another thread. Here it is, towards the end of it. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=783024&page=2

Thanks for the reply! What starter relay do I need? I think I have the harness from the truck that that drivetrain came out of, is there one on it? I’m also going to rob the connectors for the NSS from it.

Well, I don't have the relay nor the harness ends. My 05 harness has the single connector but I have the NSS with two connectors. Which connector do I need the big one or small? Can I just fill the one I do not need with silicone to keep the water out?
I'm also still looking for the relay that Nova mentioned.

It sounds like you have the wrong NSS for your harness. Rather than modifying the harness I would just get the correct switch. As for the relay, I just get them at the junk yard, they have a weatherpack connector and a tab to mount them with, works nice. The original relay would have been the big underhood fuse box which I assume you are not using?

They can be found on a lot of GM cars and trucks from the late 90's to early/mid 2000's. I think these came off of an S10 though.

Nova, my harness is from BP so there are no plugs for the NSS. II have the older two plug NSS so I’m buying the 7 pin pigtail to do the wiring for the pcm. I’m assuming I can just seal up the 4 wire area with silicone correct?

Yes, you should only need wires in the big connector for the back up lights and neutral safety portions of the switch. I suppose you could silicone the other area, but if it were me, I would just get the plug for it if you are getting the other plug at the junk yard or something. I may even have an extra one lying around, but I would have to check....

Thanks for the reply. I ordered the 7 wire connector and will just seal the other up. I will find that relay in my stash somewhere.
