Anybody tell me what the correct p metric tire replacement size is for the 9.50 x 16.5" that came on my 1973 GMC 3/4 ton truck?

There isn't one. 16.5 tires never got with that P metric stuff. You are looking for 9.50R - 16.5s. That's what Firestone sells in the Transforce HT line

The ‘P’ stands for passenger. IIRC.
The equivalent in metric if you could find it would be 245 75 16.5.

Your tires are 30.6 inches tall.
A 255 75 16 would be close at 30.9.

Smart to get new wheels. I was in a hurry to go camping so I bought a set of Firestone Transforce tires. I'll be getting 16" wheels next time. If something happens on the road, I want all the same size. Since I didn't have a spare anyway, I did buy one 16" wheel when I came back from that camping trip. 4 more to go.
