Window washer runs when wipers are on
Replaced the plastic bits in the washer motor today. When I run the wipers now the washer fluid is always on.
74 truck with a 78 harness and the wiper switch out of a 78. Any thoughts? I searched but couldn't find a good answer |

Re: Window washer runs when wipers are on
There have been a number of threads on this problem. Seems this is generally an issue that lots of folks have with the '78 washer/wiper. Remans are prone to this issue. I went through 2 in a matter of months and finally gave up and installed a separate washer pump.

Re: Window washer runs when wipers are on
x2 on the separate washer pump. My 83 has the integral wiper motor/washer motor and they have to be replaced as one unit - AC Delco is about $100 - and the washer gives out but the wiper motor keeps working. I used a $12 motor from the local Auto Zone and it works better than the stock one. No "clunk, clunk, clunk" when using the washer. The fluid squirts for as long as you are pressing on the washer button.

Re: Window washer runs when wipers are on
Mine did, and probably still does. I posted what I found in posts 7 & 8 here:
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...62#post8504462 I have older trucks that never had a washer, so I'm used to not having one. I've almost forgotten this newer one ever had one, but I will look for a fix if that original wiper motor ever quits. |

Re: Window washer runs when wipers are on
Not sure if your 74's wiper/washer setup is the same as my 82, but mine had the same problem intermittently. Took it apart and thought I had it fixed, but it started doing the same thing after a few uses. It's a huge Rube Golberg mechanical contraption, and I think what happens is the two nylon parts get worn down. And, of course, they are unavailable.
Bought a rebuilt one at a parts store, and it had the same problem. Took it back and got another that looked brand new (from another supplier), but the washer didn't work. Finally gave up and removed a few parts to disable the washer, and then wired in an electric pump. Works great now and sprays as long as I press on the switch.

Funny, I just finished replacing the motor with a cardone unit, and it works perfectly. Just an old warn out unit
