Is this just normal wear on an ignition switch...

I noticed this when I was given a gold plated key from my locksmith friend - when I tested the blank in my switch, I gave it a turn and started the truck right up.. I probably should get a new switch if that's the case - so I thought I'd inquire. thanks!

It isn't a problem with the switch, it is a problem with the lock cylinder. Maybe there aren't any tumblers in the cylinder. It wouldn't be the first time someone removed them.

LockDoc, is the cylinder easy to pull? Isn't that the maneuver with a paperclip and turning it back past accessory position?

I did find the procedure to remove the ignition lock cylinder but try as I might it won’t come out I guess it will stay as is.

Does your ignition switch go into an accessory position, which is to the left of the key straight up and down off position? It takes finesse to get the cylinder out.

Is this the one you used?

"67's and some 68's don't have an accessory position. Just put the key in the ignition and "gently" turn it as far to the left as it will go. Insert a straightened paper clip in the hole (the large ones work best) and push the release pin down (go easy here, it doesn't take much pressure at all) and turn the cylinder to the left a little more. As you turn the cylinder you have to remove the paper clip or it will bind in the hole. The cylinder should pull out. You should not have to force anything."

Just for general info, you have to remove the lock cylinder before the bezel will screw off to remove the switch.

Thanks Leon. Yes I was - but I wasn’t gentle like you suggest. Once I took it easy it came right out. There are not any moving components here to see. Can you tell by the pics of it is like you suggest, and why any key will turn it? My locksmith friend is not home at the moment, but I can show home tomorrow. Thank you.

This Mechanic where I live had a one of our trucks for sale on his lot. Wasn't all that nice, but I stopped to look at it. I took the key for my truck and started it. He come out and was a little peeved that I used my key to start it. Any how they get worn down and sometimes a smaller screwdriver will work.

No problem.

Take the same pictures with the key out of it if you can. I don't see any problems in those. When you remove the key the sidebar should pop out. (The rectangular piece in the second picture)

Here is the before and after with the key. The bar doesn’t stick out very much with the key removed. I take it that keeps the cylinder from turning. I think what’s happening is that the bar isn’t enough to lock it, and there is enough play to use my key blank to turn the ignition

Yes, that's the problem. The cylinder needs replaced.

Replacing the switch won't solve his problem unless it comes with a new ignition lock cylinder. The slot inside the switch may be worn some also, but the main problem is that the sidebar and tumblers are worn out in the lock cylinder.

I'll probably pick up another cylinder at some point to replace it. There is a great parts store out here called the Filling Station - they have new ones for $15

I recommend getting the 2 door locks and the ignition cylinder as a set, that way they will all work off the same key without having to get them re-keyed.
