Replacing glass in window channel

I purchased a truck that had a busted window but came with an extra window that was already in the window channel. Went to install the extra window but the channel was for the other door, not the one I needed.

How hard is it to remove the glass from one window channel and install in another window channel? Is this something better left for an auto glass company to swap?

Get a tube of 3M Windowweld. Apply in track channel insert glass. Let dry according to the instructions on the tube. I did this on my 68 and it worked perfectly. just don't get any on your hands cause it ain't coming off!! Joseph

Do not attempt to pry the channel off the glass. Tempered glass is brittle on its edges.

Instead, lay a wood block on the glass along the edge of the channel and tap the block to get the channel off the glass.

You can use Window Weld or any automotive urethane to set the glass, but you're going to want to test fit it first. Put the channel onto the rollers on the regulator and put the glass in the glass run. Run the regulator up and down to make sure your channel is not going to bind or run off the rollers. Mark the position with a Sharpie and then go ahead and glue the glass in the channel. It's also a good time to lubricate the rollers with some white lithium grease.

It's actually a lot easier to install the channel first and then glue in the glass. After you glue in the glass run the window to the top and leave it there for 24 hours.

You can also use JB Weld to glue the glass in the channel. If you decide to use urethane, denatured alcohol does a pretty good job of cleaning it up without risking damage to painted surfaces.

Do I still need to use any setting tape along with the window weld sealant?

No. The tape is harder to come by these days. Everything is set with adhesives. If I were doing it on mine I would use JB Quick Weld. It's about as close as you can get to commercial glass setting epoxy.

Sorry, I spelled the name wrong. It's JB KwikWeld. You can find it at Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, O'Reilly...

I would use Glass Setting tape like original, if you glue the window in the channel you will never be able to get it out again.

I've owned probably 20 or 25 trucks and at least that many cars over the years. I've never had the need to get the window off the channel.

And if you need to you can chisel/scrape it out. That's how we have to do it with the newer vehicles, which are all set with epoxy.
