History/differences of 3 speed trannies ?
I have a cracked tranny case in a 68. 3 speed manual tranny. Currently looking for replacement but now noticing some differences, especially with the side covers. Some are 7 bolt, like mine, and others are different. Looks like around 1970 they changed. Can anyone elaborate on that ? For example, are they all the same length, gear ratio, all synchronized . Interchangeable? Tks.

I don't know about the differences but I have a 3 speed still in my all original 68 I'm not going to use.
There was a thread a month are so ago on here that we talked about this. I posted pictures of mine then.

4 bolt covers are non synchro first gear in ‘67 later 7 bolt are stronger and completely synchronized

Stick with finding another 7 bolt side cover Saginaw and you'll be fine.

True. Saginaw case is iron, tough as nails, Muncie case was aluminum, a little lighter, mostly used in cars of the late 60s, early 70s.

Re: History/differences of 3 speed trannies ?
Great info as usual ! Thanks everybody. I'll stick with looking for one with 7 bolt side cover. Mine has 3-4 inch crack by drain plug. Looks like it was "braised" (spelling- goldish color-leaks).
