I keep loosing upper fender bolt

I keep loosing my upper right fender bolt and spacers by the windshield. It takes a month or 2 to loose them but am Leary about using lock tite in case I have to remove the fender in the future. I had to replace weld nut on my other truck and is was not fun when the bolt started twisting the nut on the body

Re: I keep loosing upper fender bolt

We built about 15 million squarebodies (so about 30 million fender attachments) and I have never heard of this phenomenon before.

You might want to look at the rest of the attachments and see if something else is causing this (ie, loose or bad radiator support cushions, other loose attachments or maybe too many shims at that location, etc).

In any case - I would think a little blue Loctite would be ok.

Re: I keep loosing upper fender bolt

I've lost a few on my dually as well. I always no it because the truck starts creaking really bad over bumps all of a sudden. Sure enough, each time it happens, the bolt is missing again.

Re: I keep loosing upper fender bolt

If you are worried about spinning another weld nut, put the loctite on the nut head and shims. Not as secure but might be enough.

Thread a piece of copper wire in with the bolt. The wire will meld into the threads and stay tight.

Where does that fall in the spectrum of red vs blue?

Re: I keep loosing upper fender bolt

The only things I could think that "over time" would cause this is:
1. Not having a bolt at the bottom of the fender under the cab, or a rusted fender that cant be secured.
2. A bent fender that the door hits when opening and closing.
3. Tires that rub the fenders when turning or going through dips and vibrate the fenders with the tread.
4. Off-roading on washboard roads.
5. Excessive shopping cart bashing at the local mall.

Re: I keep loosing upper fender bolt

a coating of solder on the threads works great, add a piece of thin copper wire if the fit is very loose.

2. A bent fender that the door hits when opening and closing. No interference @ the doors. A couple of small door dings only on my OE sheet metal.
3. Tires that rub the fenders when turning or going through dips and vibrate the fenders with the tread. Aftermarket raised inner fender wells so no rubbing except for the seldom buzz (happened maybe 3-4 times since 2015) if turned too sharp while navigating a dip/driveway entrance.
4. Off-roading on washboard roads. Only 'off-roading' mine experiences is an occasional field maybe at idle speed. Now our regular pothole infested roads are a different story....
5. Excessive shopping cart bashing at the local mall. 2x parking lot bruises. Other than that, no shopping cart bashing.
While anything is possible....

Re: I keep loosing upper fender bolt

Any way to safety wire it?....drill a hole thru the head...tighten bolt ...run wire thru hole and fasten to something

Re: I keep loosing upper fender bolt

My guess is you have a vibration problem you may not feel but your bolt and fender are feeling it, that’s why they keep vibrating out.

Don’t put a bandaid on your knee when the cut is on your finger.

Rather than patch the problem, I would look at trying to solve the issue.
