Well, my 1958 two ton had a 235 straight six

My C-50 had a 305 V-6 (not exactly a "small" block).

Friends I used to work for had 1946 and 1947 dump trucks which must have had something like a 216.

All of the above were certainly dual rear wheel trucks.

I saw a 1 ton tow truck in upstate NY that had the original 230 I-6.

I am sure there are sone that got a 265 in the late 50s. Why do you ask?

I've a 350 in my 82,C-30 car hauler.
It could use more power and torque,but it gets it done.
My 79,P-30 van had a 292 six in it.Wasn't great on the interstate,but it sure could pull.
They built many,many heavy duty trucks with small engines.It's all in the gearing

Had a customer years ago that purchased a dually with a small block. Engine was worn out in 85k. He had me put in a 454, lots more power of course, but he claimed that the mileage went up 2mpg

My teacher in aviation mechanics in high school had a new regular cab dually with a 350. He'd let me take it to get the class doughnuts on fridays. Its what hooked me on the vortec 350. So much torque. The thing just went with like no throttle around town unloaded. I'm sure the 4.11's helped.

Thanks guys, just wondered, my 85 crewcab dually has a 350, and could use a little more. I have had 2 different people tell me that one had a 80 crewcab, with a 305, from the factory, and another guy had a single cab dually with a rebuilt 307, he said it did just fine. hard to believe.

The 307 harkens back to the days where one tons would get them standard. You were lucky not to get a straight six! For a work truck, gearing is all thats needed. With 4.56 gears, even a 307 should haul a max gvwr load on a truck from this vintage. Slowly up hills, sure. Firedog, where in the metro are ya?

If they didnt pull much they might be ok with the 305/307....but the 350 in my 81 was a dog when I pulled my tractor on a trailer...running empty is was as good as any truck...truck only had 21000 miles on it when I did the LS swap...

I've pulled dually-worthy loads with a K-10 with a 350/SM465 and it was no big deal going up even steep hills but coming down was another story: could have definitely used a lot more truck coming down (next time I used a C-50 BTW)

The 350 with the TH350 was a sorry combination IMO. Was good at making noise and burning gas but not so good at actually getting up hills, though you would get there eventually.

My 350 is the same as it was a Cal “spec” so it got low compression pistons and put out a whopping 155 HP when it was new.

Now it has never been run for long periods at high Rpms so at 100k miles it still has some life, but it is definitely not fast.
