New front disc brake caliper and pad issue--the clip doesnt hold--what to do?
At first I didnt think this was a big deal, not sure how snug the brake pad clip is really supposed to be..but this one when installed in a new pad and attached to a new caliper it just falls out. Ive tried bending it a bit to give it more tension and no luck. I installed just to see if it makes a difference and when spinning the rotor there is enough play between the cylinder and the pad that its riding on the rotor and making a scraping noise when spinning the rotor.
I havent gotten any of the brake system installed, still working on that. I just wanted to attach the new calipers on the rotors with brake pads and put the tires on. But this is all new to me and Im not sure whats normal for this. Any help is appreciated. Here is my original caliper that I painted red and stored away for 3 years...and I was told that the chances of it be good are slim since it had been used and was stored away so long. So I thought I should replace them. When I put the pad into the old caliper it hugs up nice and doesnt drop out when you flip it over. Ill post pics of both so you can see. |

The new caliper just drops the pad out when flipped over, is this normal?

When I installed it and spun it I heard the metal like grinding sound. Maybe until the system is in place and pressure is in the system this might correct but it seems like the pad thats supposed to be clipped to the cylinder should be more snug. Here is a pic of the play it has if you wiggle it side to side through the hole in the caliper while its installed.

Just shove it over the rotor, it will be fine.

So that clip really isnt supposed to hold the pad tight to the cylinder? Its normal to hear the sound of the pad making contact with the rotor without the braking system being fully assembled?

It would be nice for the clip to hold the pad when you rotate the caliper but I wouldn't sweat it. The pads touch the rotors all the time, just slight drag, by design. You're good to go.

It's called "anti rattle clip" That's exactly what it's supposed to do, keep the pads from rattling. Not a huge deal if you don't use it, you may get some clicking noise at slow speed, stop and go. However there's no reason for you to not be able to adjust the tension so it stays in place. I would use it and get new ones if you think it absolutely won't bend to shape.
Those calipers look like you got them from rockauto, they sell the kits that contain the anti rattle clips also

Re: New front disc brake caliper and pad issue--the clip doesnt hold--what to do?
Thanks guys, I just wasnt sure. New territory for me. The clip was included in the caliper box from Rockauto and thats the one I was using. I took these to a shop and asked over the weekend about it and the consensus is all the same, let it ride. He did tell me though as he had done brake jobs for decades that there are a few things he likes to do when installing these. He said anywhere there is metal contact between the pad and the caliper to use a lubricant to stop them from sticking. The stuff he recommended was Permatex Ceramic Extreme Brake Parts Lubricant.
https://www.amazon.com/Permatex-2412...ct_top?ie=UTF8 He said its high temp and doesnt burn off. Ive used silicone on the pins and the rubber so it will glide better, but the Permatex stuff he says just to put on the metal parts of the pad that make contact with the caliper. He also showed me that the pad that on the outside of the rotor will be loose and that he always took a screwdriver to pry it upward so that the tabs of the pad were pushed up as high as they would go and then take a hammer and tap the tabs down flush with the caliper so the pad is tightly in the caliper. He said it will rattle a good bit otherwise. Ill post a few pics once I do the install later this week. |

I squeeze those tabs with Channel-Locks. That's a "kinder, gentler" approach. If you can call the #460 Channel-Locks "gentle".

Easy to adjust the outer pad "fingers" use a crescent wrench, adjust to fit the small finger and bend slightly using the leverage of the wrench, test fit outer pad for a snug fit.
