86 Suburban 8.5 rear axle dumb question ??

My 86 has 30 spline axles in the 10 bolt rear, it’s supposed to have 28 spline, can it be changed back to 28 spline ??

In a bbw such as a Suburban you do not want 28 spline axles, and the 30's should be factory.

On 28 vs 30 splines. The actual splines are the same size, but the axle get thicker to accommodate more splines.

You axles carry some of the weight of the Burb, and you need thicker ones to survive.

One axle is slightly bent, I ordered a new 28 spline and it doesn’t work, I have a 28 spline carrier/posi-unit that I’d like to use.

Re: 86 Suburban 8.5 rear axle dumb question ??

It's up to you, but I wouldn't do the down grade in strength. Just return your axles, and get the right ones. Even chromoly would be nice if your not tight on budget.

Will 28 splines work, and last under normal driving yes. It's not like it is just going fail on you.

I am not one who has ever really been on the 12 bolt or 9" bandwagon. Not saying they are not better, but at what cost vs what I do. I have a tendency to work trucks pretty hard for a average guy, and I know how to tow. Since I did long haul for a few years. That is why I am a light duty C20 guy. So i can feel safer doing the dumb S××t I do.

Just that a Suburban is 5000 pounds or a bit over depending on how it is optioned. I would for my personal sake prefer to upgrade it the best I could, and with in my budget.
