1963 rear end swap
Posted via Mobile Device
New to forum...I just bought a ‘63 C10 long bed (original straight 6). My current direction is to install the cpp drop spindles and disc conversion and use cpp rear lowering kit (4-5”). I want to drive it with stock engine so my son can play on the 3 on the tree. BUT ultimately my plan is to replace the engine with a small block and upgrade rear end to posi-trac. What’s the best option for rear end swap OR upgrade? This may be on another thread someplace... just a side note: I am still undecided if I should go ahead and swap to 5 lug when I do front disc conversion. From what I have read is that ‘63 has a 17 spline axle. What’s my best options? Last edited by CRoss; 11-15-2019 at 04:13 PM. |

Re: 1963 rear end swap
One option is to find you a 65-72 c10 cool spring rear.
Your 63 has 17 spline axles (it will still work for your needs) but the 65-72 has 31 spline axles. With either option (other than 71/72) Next I would just pull the axles to have redrilled for 5 lug, then throw a ptrack and new gears in it.

Re: 1963 rear end swap
Welcome to the forum
![]() The first thing I would do is pull the axles and check the axle bearing surfaces. If they are worn, you will need new axles anyway. If you are wanting to upgrade to a posi, which will be 30 spline, a new set of 5 lug conversion axles are not too terribly expensive. Now if you are wanting to also convert to rear disc brakes, you will need a different housing as the '63 12 bolt has the backing plates pressed onto the axle tubes.
