Customer Restoration Job almost done (long thread) - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

This 71 that we started doing some time back for a customer, that strated out life as a fram and a cab w/ doors (some of you out there have seen it as it has been going on) and it is almost ready to leave.

The truck is built almost entirly of repro parts (fenders, grill, bedsides, tail gate, headboard, trim, dash cluster, vent windows, bumpers and all of little stuff). It started out as a non-a/c truck that we put in an "Old Air" clean firewall unit and cut the dash and modified the controller to appear factory.

Here is a list of Mods to the truck:

early 454 w/ 92 serpentine drive
aftermarket A/C
power windows
power door locks
front disk brakes (chrome)
rear disk brakes (chrome)
th400
3" & 5" spring drop
all chassis and underside media blasted and painted
72 gas pedal
tilt
bumper gaurds
rear mounted fuel tank
added cargo light and switch
HEI
and alot of other little stuff

After it leaves here he is going to take it and have the seats re-done in leather (same color as the dash pad), have the door panels made (and also wraped in leather) and hopefully put on a different air cleaner. He has a KILLER set of 20" wheels and if he has us put them on I will definetly get some pics.

the front brakes are off a 72 but the rear one is a CPP kit (easiest mod I have ever done - a straight bolt on change over)

If I can ask, What did you use for the tank. Did you get something custom or buy it from another vendor.

Also, how did you run the fill tube? Rubber,mandrel bent pipe etc..
How much clearance is there between the tire and the tube?

it is a poly tank (from us, but now we only carry the metal ones) see - tanks on sale to the 15th - right now I have them on sale to the board members

When we had the other wheels and tires (very low profile) on it there was about 3-4" clearance from the filler tube. It would be close on a daily driver, but this one won't see much use or ever have anything in it's bed.

How much longer will you guys have that truck around. I really like that gas filler setup. I wish I had looked at the truck a little closer when I was there last week, I would have talked your ear off about how to do it.

its a gorgeous truck and i really love your work. i have one comment/question which is not meant in any way to take away from your work....
Is that gas tank filler set up a good idea it looks like you could damage it quite easily on a good bump or an accident? and also are there alternative mounting places for the gas tank filler without using the bed area like that? i am thinkoing one day of getting a 72 and would love to figure out where else to mount the tank where its more of a safe mod
again tho beautiful truck im very impressed!

As a daily driver it wouldn't be a good idea because it more than likely would cause problems, and if it were mine I probably wouldn't have put it there. But since that is where the customer wanted it - thats where it ended up.

I have my filler come up in the fender well and I havent had a problem with it. I have 18 inch wheels. I think if I had 20's there would be a clearance problem.

Looks great...love the color. I see the heater control box is still in the cab, but I see no heater box...did you remove it for looks or is there something behind the dash that you are using for heat ?

Very nice work!!!!!! Blue 4x4 I also had the same ? B ut if you look over where the blower motor should be it look's like a/c line's commming out(could be wrong tho)..

I'm over looking info in posts all the time, and I had to read the post again to learn it has an "Old Air" kit in it and they custom fablicated the original controls to work it

I did notice the gas pedal is not a 72 but actually a 67-70 design

I must say that truck is as cherry as they get. I think the paint really sets it off good. What color did you say that was?

I have seen this truck in person and I am in love with it! I am mocking my truck after many of these features. The seats are really nice and the A/C is very clean looking.

looking at the engine pic.i almost swear there was red paint under the hood.until i relized thats the motor reflecting onto it.sweet truck
