86 silverado air cond upgrade.
I am moving to a much hotter climate and the stock air cond in my truck has never been that great.
It has a new four seasons compressor. New dryer. Shut of tap for the heater. Re gased. When engaged it sends a vibration through the truck at idle even with the solenoid idle kicker is engaged. Not sure if this normal as it did that with the old pump as well and I thought the new one would eliminate that? It also kills my gas mileage by way more than I would expect but maybe that's normal also? Is there a more efficient modern compressor or complete set up I can install ? |

Re: 86 silverado air cond upgrade.
What refrigerant? How much? Was it vacuum pumped before being filled? If the refrigerant was changed, was the old oil flushed out?
R-134 is a lot less tolerant of air in the system and being either over or under charged. My 75 has the older style long compressor and I don't notice much vibration and I don't have the idle solenoid. Mine costs me 1~2mpg at speed. |

I live in Texas.. After talking to a lot of people here, instead of rebuilding the original system, I am going vintage air!

Re: 86 silverado air cond upgrade.
I work for a refrigeration company. Our shop truck is a '79 C30 with a 454 and original AC still in place. I went through the system, replaced all the O-rings and both rubber hoses.
Pressure tested it over night, then pulled a vacuum on it with our big Appion vac pump. After it achieved a nice, deep vacuum (500 Microns), I installed the proper amount of R-12 back into the system. That thing will FREEZE YOU OUT! Even when it's triple digit temps, it's always cool in The Dually. The point being, there is nothing wrong with the design of the factory AC, and parts are still available. My opinion is worth exactly what you are paying me for it. -Russ |

Alot of mechanics dont vaccum, and noncondensibles stay in. Ruining the performance. My sister's husband was looking at me like I was a freak using nitrogen on a friends truck. The compressor was changed, but I spent time blowing R11 flush through it since it had several dye packets added in its life time. |
