Truck all over the lane.
What would cause my truck to wander all over the lane? I’ve had the steering box rebuilt but it’s still got a bit of play in the steering wheel. The tie rod ends seemed good.

Re: Truck all over the lane.
Get someone in the truck to saw the wheel back and forth...get under the truck and look for slack points in anything....could also be alignment...I'd find a good alignment shop...
What truck do you have?

Re: Truck all over the lane.
Alignment Cast may be too little. King pins worn. Since you didn't indicate what year or suspension you have, who knows?

Re: Truck all over the lane.
1971 C10 stock suspension. Not lowered. Not sure if the steering box was added after.
It did this a bit before the ls swap. But not bad. Now its really difficult to control. Maybe the added weight from 250 to 5.3. |

As mentioned above check the steering components. The weight of the engine shouldn't make that much difference. If you haven't had it done yet get the front end aligned. Toe in/out, the castor (as Rocknrod mentioned) and other alignment problems can cause that. LockDoc

Re: Truck all over the lane.
Check your drag link. If it is installed backwards it will dart all over the road.

Re: Truck all over the lane.
I can tell you from experience that not enough caster will cause a front end to wander all over the place!

Re: Truck all over the lane.
As stated above, check the drag link to make sure its not either installed backwards, or from a different year truck. Check alignment as well. Bemerdoc has a good write up for alignment numbers.

Re: Truck all over the lane.
If you are running a 5.3 I assume you have a 5.3 style power steering pump. It may be that the 5.3 pump is over assisting your new rebuilt box. I'm about to order a flow restricter from Turn One to see if that helps my LS swapped 68. Mine is way over assisted. It's like driving a 1980's dodge car.

Re: Truck all over the lane.
My truck was doing the same thing. The rag joint was worn out and the upper coupling. I pulled it all out and put in a new Borgeson intermediate shaft. Cured all my problems.

Re: Truck all over the lane.
Just FYI. I spoke with Turn One. One of their techs was very helpful. He did not recommend their flow restricter for my LS swap. He said it could cause problems with consistent steering response. He said the real problem is the steering box valve. Needs to be reworked to match the LS steering pump. They could mod my steering box for about $250.
