Got the motor turning
The engine in my 67 was stuck from the PO leaving the heads off for some years (it looked rough). After spraying it all down with penetrating oil and cleaning up the cylinders we were able to slowly get the motor turning over and all seems good so far. The cylinders all cleaned up really nice. I was really planning on replacing it but I’m going to give it a chance and maybe we will get lucky if nothing else is wrong. It was supposed to run really strong but they “took the heads off to rebuild and never got them back on”
I know it’s a gamble and we should probably just have pulled it but for a $40 gasket kit and some supplies It’s a cheap experiment. Hopefully have it running sometime in the next week. |

Re: Got the motor turning
I dig it. What have you got to loose, right? I think my biggest fears would be either crap in the oil pan getting stuck in a port, or loosing compression depending how bad the cylinder walls were. Might try and flush that oil as much as possible before you run it, then give it an oil change quickly afterwards.

Re: Got the motor turning
What did the oil look like when you drained it? If there was any water in it, I'd be concerned that water might have made its way past the rings and to the crankshaft.

Re: Got the motor turning
Pour a quart of Marvels Mystery Oil in with 4 quarts of your favorite zinc ladened 30w oil and fire that old girl up. Run her through a couple of heat cycles tuning her up and change the oil and filter. Take a compression test to reveal any possibly weak cylinders and you should be good to go...

Re: Got the motor turning
Externally the engine shows it's age but my goodness, inside it cleaned up real nice. The piston tops and cylinder walls look great. Hardly any ring groove to be seen. Having it opened up this far aren't you curious what shape the cam is in too?

Re: Got the motor turning
I'm not aware of any oils currently available with an amount of zinc to protect flat tappet cams these days. There are small bottles of zinc additive available at all the usual auto parts stores.

Re: Got the motor turning
You are right about that, it cleaned up a lot more than I was expecting. I am curious about the cam but I’m really just wanting to see if it will run and it’s not knocking or any bottom end problems before I put any real money in it.

Re: Got the motor turning
I was looking at some different zinc additives, STP sells one and some others. Any suggestions on which one I should get?

Re: Got the motor turning
Did not look and see if you lubed a (new) cam and lifters???
Valvoline VR1 Comp Cams engine break in additive. Best stuff I found out there and 89 thousand on a top end rebuild proves it to me. |
