Can you convert 72 K10 front brakes to K20?

Without swapping complete axles? I would like to get the bigger front discs/calipers? Will the k20 parts fit on the k10 d44? Could i keep it six lug or would i have to go to 8 lug?

Thanks

The K20 brakes are not all the much larger than the 10s. Are you having a braking problem or just want more stopping power.

And yes you wold have to go to 8 lug

What kwmech said. 1/2t 3/4t are the same knuckle to knuckle. Have to change spindles, hubs rotors, calipers and I think the outer axle stub shafts. Have seen talk about some D44's that have thicker axle tubes.

You could install the 3/4 t booster for added braking power. Seems like guys that have gone this route have been pleased. Might be a useful first step.

Re: Can you convert 72 K10 front brakes to K20?

Thanks guys. The reason I ask is I have been looking for a k20 for a couple years. Finally came across a clean k10 that I like a lot. I want to use the truck for work and need to be able to regularly tow a heavy 22’ boat (approx 6-7k lbs). I’m wondering if the k10 will be able to stop it.

Does the boat trailer have brakes?

Convert the truck to 3/4 then, use a 14b in the rear and convert the front to 8 lug. You can still use the 1/2 ton calipers on the 8 lug rotors. Rear conversion will give you a 13'' drum. Then use the 3/4 ton booster and MC

I do not own anything 1/2 ton. Years ago I had an incident with a C clip breaking and an axle shaft walking out the side of the truck. Never again--always a full float for a truck.

Ok so youre saying leave the front axle but convert it to 3/4 stuff, and find a full float 14 bolt from a 80s chevy? The eaton axle that comes stock in most 72k20s is ff as well?

I could put brakes on the trailer if i had to. But thats annoying cuz it sees constant saltwater use and the brakes never hold up.
