Re: Cab seams factory mess up?

Trucks were considered as "utility" vehicles in those days. Visible spot welds on the exterior of the vehicle, for example, were the standard. We're spoiled these days with the plastic strips that cover the roof welds to the a/b/c pillars that used to have people leading them in or applying Bondo to cover the joint.

I have a cab that looks like the top skin was short, or they missed when they welded it on. You have to be on top to see it, but it is hideous.

Re: Cab seams factory mess up?

There was a bend in the floor of my truck where it meets the firewall panel that I could tell by the way it was welded that was bent when put together. I drilled out the spot welds and straightened it up.

Re: Cab seams factory mess up?

I've seen other A pillar gaps that bad (wide) before, but never seen anything like that drip rail.

New guy on the line?

A friend of mine actually has a truck where the entire PS A-pillar looks like it was stamped slightly wrong. It's a lot more "flat" than the DS (the rolled bead down the side) Truck appears to have factory paint, or it's a super old, like when truck was new-ish repair, but nothing else seems wrong or damaged.

Re: Cab seams factory mess up?

My “Body And Paint” teacher in High School told me the local Dealerships would keep him busy “Fixing and Adjusting” misalignmened Panels and doors, that came from the factory so messed up they couldn’t be opened or closed right.
Of course this was back in the 50s 60s and 70s.

They would let a lot of "things" go when the demand was higher than the supply.

My cab had the same or similar defect that I am currently repairing along with both inner and outer rockers as well as low door post.

Basically, the floor panel has a 1/4" or less bent lip that the firewall should engage. However, floor panel was too "short" and thus the floor panel lip prevented the floor and firewall from coming together tight. It seems the factory tried to spot weld these panels anyway and of course since the panels were about 3/16" apart, the spot welds failed and only made little dimples in the sheet metal. The factory tried to fix the issue with a few bugger welds on the outside edge. Of course the bugger welds failed and the panels were loose. I could tell there was something wrong when I pressed hard with my left foot and felt the floor give. I assumed it was rust, but now that i am fixing the rockers, the truth is out.

My fix is to straighten or flatten the floor panel lip, then drill holes to properly spot weld followed by seam sealer. Oh, and the floor panel to floor panel seam had no welds at all!

Wow DavidF yours sounds worse than mine. I have high hump and passenger side was the bent side, but the spotwelds were broke halfway across the drivers side.

Re: Cab seams factory mess up?

My 68 cab floor at the firewall has a 3/16 to 1/4 inch gap between the floor pan and the firewall, from the driver side door the the center of the transmission cover.

Got to replace the floor pan anyways so I'll fix it then
