Painting frame. How did you do it?

Gonna be painting my frame. How did you do it?? What were your steps?? Info like sandpaper, wait times between coats, etc. I'm gonna be using an electric sander and wire wheel. Thanks.

I recently used a wire wheel on a grinder to clean and prep this section of my frame. I then brushed on two coats of Chassis Saver paint. It flows well but if put on too thick it will developed bubbles. Looks great from a few feet away. I plan to top coat it with some gloss rustoleum before reassembling the truck. I have read others used POR15 but I have no experience with that method.

Also heard you NEVER want to spray it, and you should wear a respirator to even brush.

I've only used the primer, which applies well using foam brushes. You'd need a lot of them for an entire frame. It sands well, though I'd be surprised if there's a tougher primer available. It's used on some bridges & dumpsters as well. Goes on silver, with the option to top coat with their black or?

I was going to use it on my chassis, but optioned out for more practical blasted & less practical powder coat.

I used a combination of wire wheel, paint stripping wheel, and portable blaster with black diamond coal slag.
Sprayed with product similar to chassis saver and top coated with satin frame paint. I’ve only done from just below the back of the cab back.

sand blasted, two coats epoxy, one coat epoxy/chassis saver satin black, two coats chassis saver satin black, and cured for a month, Quick rub with scotch bright pads, two coats satin black auto paint and three coats of satin clear.

The last frame I did i we sent to the powder coater, $600.00.
the only downside to that is you have to take off everything from the frame.

Looks like we are in about the same spot. Looking good. I am waiting on a pair of parking brake springs to finish up the rear brakes. At that point I’m gonna pull it out of the shop for pressure washing the front suspension again, wash under the cab again, and do the clr treatment on the outside. Then she will go back in the shop to pull the front apart. Paint the frame and install power steering and power disc brakes up front.

all depends on current condition and what you want it to look like when you are finished including durability and of coarse your pocket book ....i took mine apart had it blasted epoxy primed it used a product called slick sand to get rid of the scaling and rust dimples electric $ air sanders more epoxy and chassis satin from eastwood top coat ....lots of work but finished product ...well look here look... start post #7 and finish #70 u decide

Dang! If you get a rock chip it will be 1/4" deep crater.

Hey metaldoc...love your work...but

The chassis now weighs 200 pounds more due to paint build up!!!!

Assuming this will not be a daily driver when done ?

I wire brushed mine then used a degreaser and brush to help get anything off that was leftm. Then cleaned with brake cleaner. The paint I used was from SEM. I used their hardner as well. U can put it on with a brush or a spray gun. I liked it and its a very durable product. I accidentally hit a small section with brake cleaner and it didnt come off . POR15 is a good product but the shine will dull over time. If u use a brush, use gloves and paint it all at 1 time. I got some on my hands and it took nail polish remover and a week to get it off. I went this route for the current frame I am working on. Fully stripped to just two crossmembers and two rails. Powder coater charged me $500 for gloss black. Came out really nice.

Had it sandblasted for $120, then sprayed it all with POR-15.

The POR-15 went on nice and is still decent after 15yrs. It faded pretty bad though. Basically went from a gloss finish to a matte finish after about 5 yrs.

I'd probably use it again.

I sandblasted my frame and then applied MasterSeries Primer Sealer (2 coats) followed by 2 coats of AG 111 topcoat. It goes on thick and requires thinner (provided by MasterSeries) but is as tough as nails. I've since used it on crossmembers and even metal not related to my build project and have loved how it's been impervious to the snow and winter elements here.

I decided against powercoat only because I wanted to touch up if I ever had rock chips, dings etc. With any paint application (Por 15, AG) that's relatively easy to do.

I got a bunch of cans of oven cleaner at the dollar store, sprayed it down, let it soak then power washed.

I brush painted it with paint (ugh I forgot the name) that is supposed to be applied to the bare metal. Its a semi gloss and is tough as nails. No need for any other kind of coats. Ive used it on two chassis now and its great. Of course I wasn't looking for a show style chassis either.
