P/S knocking what should I Do?
The P/s Pump has developed a teltale knocking. Sounds like a loud rocker tap. I can also wiggle the pully about a 1/4" back and forth.
So, Question is this: I'm pretty broke, and it's my only car. Until I can get out to a junkyard or find one somewhere else, can I cut the belt? I'm not sure how the truck would handle without power steering, or if it would hurt the steering box to run without it, but that sounds better than loosing that pulley while I'm driving around looking for a job. That's what I would do. I think that option is better than having the pully and shaft fly out when you take off from a light.
Be prepaired for some fluid to blow out the cap, and I hope you don't have a small steering wheel. Parking will be a b!tch. |

Power steering, minus the belt, equals "Armstrong Steering".
I had an '82 Toyota Diesel longbed pick up, without power steering. Wasn't a real problem until I had to parallel park. I didn't do that very often. Make sure your water pump and alternator still function.

i lost my power steering belt one night and let me tell you. you do not want to drive a truck with a power steering box without the pump hooked up. i have manual steered trucks and cars and i would have to say steering the power steering truck without the power was about 10 times harder. and im not a little guy. i wouldnt advise doing it.

if ya cut the belt and run it for any length of time youll fry the steering b ox at least thats what ive always been told. ya can get a junkyard steer pump for $15 that sure beats goin for a box too and yeah if the pump is knocking like that you could just blow the thing through a radiator or something and make a big old mess when all the fluid leaks out

Yes with no power steering pump pushing the fluid you steering will be harder than if you had manual steering. To make it easier on you, unhook the lines going into the gear box and turn the wheel back and forth till you get all the fluid out of the box. Make sure and have a drip pan. Don't hook the lines back up but make sure there out of the way. I wouldn't recommend driving around to long like that becuase like the others say i'm sure it isn't that great on your steering box.
