Door Glass Question

I am building a 1951 5-window cab and using 1950 doors. My question is: "Can I install the door glass without the metal channel around the glass?"
I appreciate any help you can give me.

Re: Door Glass Question

you could probably have a local glass shop make you some thicker glass that is slightly bigger, and glue it to the channel like the 52-55.1 glass is done.

can you do it with the thinner glass just by removing the frame? maybe... to my inexperience it seems like the glass would bang around a lot in the extra space and wouldnt go up high enough. you can try it and let us know? maybe someone has already tried it.

Re: Door Glass Question

Old-time glass shops also have an assortment of glass felt channel of various thicknesses that could take up the slop.

Re: Door Glass Question

Both answers are correct and work together.

The glass will be the same thickness but larger.
There are outfits that do tempered flat glass for cars and you might want to look into that as it may stand up to heavy handed passengers who tend to slam the door on the trucks. This is one that is between Miricalpieco and me and I am thinking seriously about having do my glass when the 48 is to that point.

There is also channel with a narrower groove that replaces the stock channel so you can run without the frame around the glass. I'd get a sheet or part of a sheet of Masonite and use the Window frame that is around the glass as a pattern. That way you can get the windows to fit and slide up and down and have patterns to send off or take to a local glass shop.
