Clutch disengagement problems, HELP please!!

1970 K10 350 sbc, SM465 and NP205

Hello everyone, I believe I am having problems with my not properly engaging with the flywheel. The backstory is that the truck was shifting fine, I wasn’t driving it a lot bc it’s being fixed up but I took around the block a few times with no problems. I recently pulled the transmission from the truck I order to regasket it and paint it while it was out I also replaced the throw out bearing.

The problem: When I went to test it after putting the transmission back into the truck I noticed that no power is getting to the transmission. The shifter moves fine in between gears with no binding but when I release the clutch pedal the truck does nothing; it doesn’t move and it does not lurch and shut off. I can have the truck in any gear and turn it on and it doesn’t move and will stay running.Looking into port where the clutch fork is I can see the throw out bearing pressing the diaphram fingers inwards when the pedal is pressed and releasing completely when the pedal is fully released. When I reinstalled the tranny I could feel the shaft slide into the clutch smoothly and mated flush against the motor without any force needed. It just feels like the pressure plate isn’t applying any pressure to the clutch disc and it’s not grabbing the flywheel.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Re: Clutch disengagement problems, HELP please!!

how much tension is on your clutch linkage? did you check and see if the throw
out bearing was the same as the old one, if it was longer it could be riding and
releasing the pressure plate enough to let it slip. check your linkage to be sure
it's adjusted correctly.

When you replaced the transmission, did you replace the throw out bearing?

There are two different heights of release bearings...seems you may have a tall bearing where you had short bearing previously...

Try this...engine off, truck in neutral, Get under the truck and try turning the clutch plate with a screwdriver....is it spins you have the wrong release bearing in place....

I have also seen the release lever not engaged on the pivot ball correctly...pushing the release lever forward and forcing the release bearing against the clutch pressure plate....

Re: Clutch disengagement problems, HELP please!!

Thanks for all the replies!

Raceop: I never removed the clutch and it worked before so it should be in there correctly

Bbc68/20: yes the throw out were exactly the same even down to the part number and this truck has a hydraulic clutch (not OEM). I even unbolted the slave cylinder from the bracket just to make sure it wasn’t pushing on the fingers and it was doing the same thing.

Jim Boy: the throw out bearing is exactly the same

AussieinNC: yes I replaced the throw out bearing but I replaced it with same bearing I believe it was the short one. And I’ll give that a try this afternoon when I get off work, do I access that through clutch fork port or take the starter off and access it from there??

You stated you regasketed it. does that mean you pulled the side shifter fork cover? if so, perhaps the forks aren't in the correct slots on the gears?

Re: Clutch disengagement problems, HELP please!!

This one is a top loader but yes I did remove the top of the transmission with the shifter forks in order to put a new gasket on it but it went back it rather easily since I already had it half way in reverse in order to get it out and the transmission moves through the gears fine. Is it possible for it shift smoothly with the forks not being lined up all the way?

Re: Clutch disengagement problems, HELP please!!

Most likely issue for your complaint:

1. The transfer case is stuck in neutral for some reason - check the the transfer case linkage carefully for issues.

2. You punched the splined center out of the clutch disc when you reinstalled the transmission because of misalignment. This isn't likely as you would have noticed the resistance sliding the transmission back in position, but I have seen this when the transmission is forced into the bellhousing and clutch with the mounting bolts.

Okay steve thank you!

I will check to make sure everything with the transfer case I working properly and if that don’t fix it then I guess the transmission will have to come out bc something is going on with the clutch.
