OEM Windsheild

Is it worth getting an oem windsheild over a new replacement ?
Providing the oem unit is in good condition .

Or is the gasket the primary concern for a good fit ?

The repro gaskets are made for OEM windshields so they actually don't fit the new windshields well. Yes I would get it as they are thicker than new ones. I had to put a boatload of windshield sealer around my windshield to stop it from leaking (new Precision gasket and new windshield not OEM).

X2 on the NOS windshields vs OEM Aftermarket. New windshields are thinner and need sealant in the glass to rubber side.

I could imagine a NOS piece of glass is pretty much a unicorn.

Per their web site the classic glass is made to oem stds !

If you do get a thin windshield (compared to OEM) do yourself a favor and shoot a ton of 3M windoweld in there til it rolls out all the way around and then trim the excess off. I tried to be "gentle" with caulking mine and ended up unnecessarily battling the leak for a couple months as I swore that much water could not still be getting in the windshield from a leaking seal. It was like someone turned on a garden hose in my truck when it rained.

Pilkington bought LOF, one of the two OEM suppliers. They have a division for classic glass. I haven't used them yet, but I understand you can even get the LOF and correct date stamp for restoration work.

Well , I just talked these people , they said the classic glass is a hair thinner than the oem glass . He also said they have experienced no complaints.
According to them , oem glass was 1/4” thick . What is a hair thick in there mind ?

Glass price for a 70 c10 with 4” top tinted . $175. Shipping to me another $175.

Just call your local auto glass shops and get quotes from them on the glass you want . Don't pay to have glass shipped .

FWIW

PGW was the glass I broke
XYG is what the local glass shop brought for replacement ( not yet installed )

Didn't measure thickness but will later when they come back to install after I get the right gasket.

EDIT: both are green tint blue sun strip, pretty sure the CCC in a circle means it's from China!

Yes, OEM standards, that is true. But I suspect it is thinner. GM never fully address the leaks issue with these model years.

I have one, just replaced late last summer. It still will require 3M Window Weld in both Glass to Rubber side, and Rubber to Metal side.

You will also need some CRL Problem Solver Nozzles most likely.

Not necessarily made in China, but the CCC mark is required for it to be sold in China. E1 means it's certified by Germany. The DOT mark is, of course, for the US. I'm not sure what the others are.

Well according to them , there glass is a hair thinner than the 1/4” the glass was back then. GM is not the only one’s with that leak problem , Ford dealt with it too. To what extent I don’t know .

How do you know the gasket is made to oem spec’s , I haven’t seen anything yet that comes that close ?

For what it is worth, Most folks on this website have all pretty much seen that new windshields are thinner than what came with the vehicle.

Precision is at the top of their class with these gaskets. So much so, that Steele Rubber products actually buys this particular gasket from Precision. I had that conversation directly with Steele Products via email.

The DOT spec I am under the impression will tell you the thickness if you can decode the spec.

Ok , if that’s true and I have no reason to doubt you . Then if I can get a good oem windshield and use there gasket , I would be ahead of the leaking curve ?
So then my new question is , if the oem windshield needs polishing ? How well does that work ? Providing there surface scratches .

Found one the other day , not yet looked at it in person , so I am in hopes of getting this done soon.

I have dabbled in glass scratch removal without much success. I concluded it best left for one with good experience in performing the task. This will likely cost more than new glass. The problem comes from using the proper glass specific polish (don't believe the web when it says toothpaste works) and a high speed buffing tool (to keep you from rubbing your arms off for the rest of your life). Where it gets sketchy is that heat will be built up during the process and to much heat in an area causes the glass to crack and you can't buff that out. I found that very, very light scratches that wold be seen as a haze could be improved, but the actual linear scratches that you commonly see where someone ran wipers without rubbers or hit the glass with a wire wheel are not coming out without leaving a wrinkle in the glass due to having to buff so deep to remove the scratch. This would be unacceptable for me considering how much time it would take to remove the scratch, the wrinkle itself, and the risk of wasting that time due to cracking the glass.

EDIT: Be aware that original or very old glass may have had the lamination separated around the edges. This is not too big of a deal until it draws moisture and the outer perimeter of the glass fogs up. I bought a used windshield many years ago that had, what appeared to be, nice antiquing along the bottom and sides that I thought I would use in my truck...after many years in storage the "antiquing" disappeared (or dried up). I have decided not to use it for fear that it would fog back up irregularly.

I will be looking for the pilkington glass, precision seal, along with plenty of windshield sealer.

The guy installing my glass is vintage and best in the business. He says point blank OER are thinner. If I remember right he uses various vendors, even for the same part.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

I still have the original windshield and gasket that came out of my '68, they used a heck of a lot more sealant that just the top corners.
