shortblock tommorow!

okay, as many of you guys know, i am looking for an engine
well tommorow i'm gonna go on out to Moore and talk to this builder and stuff. He already has an engine that is sitting at his shop ready to rebuild for me. Gonna cost about $700 for the engine + rebuild.Half now, half when its done. Gonna have it hottanked and bored .030 over and zerodecked. The internals wont be forged but thats okay with me i guess, i dont plan on having a supercharger or nitrus and dont plan on going much over 450hp(if that)

i dont know what brand all the parts will be but hopefully my dad is gonna call him today to find out, if not, i'll find out tommorow. everyone i've talked to have said that he is great and does great work. with christmas coming up i'll be even closer to having the truck running soon.

I'm hoping that it will be drivable by the end of january.

700 dollars for just the basic engine??? What does it include? I think this is too much. If it's just a block, you can buy them all day long for a couple hundred. Heck for $700.00 it should be a running, fairly decent engine already. I say shop around some and don't rush the process.

I would have to agree with Mike here... Sounds like you are a bit too willing to toss the cash around

If I were you, I'd go to the wreckers, find yourself a decent shortblock, get the boring and stuff done on it professionally (after making sure the block is sound) then build the rest yourself, you'll save a ton of money, and you'll learn a whole lot more. Makes it a bit more satisfactory knowing that you built your own engine up, and that you know that every peice was put in properly, and that they are new peices, etc

fully rebuilt shortblock with crank, rods, pistons, oil pan, etc... i'll talk to him tommorow. my dad's been the only one able to talk to him so far since i've got school and work X 2. my dad does remember him saying that he uses ARP bolts on everything.

i do not have time knowledge or the time to build the shortblock up myself. neither do i have even half the tools needed. it would be fun, but with me going to school and working 2 different jobs, i dont have time to do it myself. the top end i will be doing though.

700 + to rebuild it is too much,

you can get a complete engine from a salvage yard to rebuild for $100 - $300,

or 1300-2300 you could get a new crate motor from chevy

#10067353 $ 1,289.00 / #12486041 $ 2,2990.00
http://www.paceparts.com/product.asp?3=3169

>>> I just noticed you are guessing 450HP ?? whats your plan to achieve that ???<<<

Call 2 or 3 local GMperformance parts dealers and verify price in your area.

$700 for a shortblock had better include forged pistons, premium bearings+rings, 4bolt bottem end, and ARP hardware everywhere, not to mention some great machine work including line hone, bore w/ torque plate, hone, checking all the lifter bores etc. Heck, a forged crank would be nice too

I'd spend $700 on a shortblock that I put together myself, but it would be the best of everything.

you guys are crazy. for a shortblock put together right with all the right machine work and good hipo parts 700 is a good deal. if its a stock rebuilt shortblock then thats high. he didn't say what kind of parts they are using but if they are good then thats a good deal. i paid more than 700 just for my crank and pistons. thats no block, no machine work, no rods, no bearings, no rings...........

i'm gonna go see him tommorow at around 12:00pm.

its not just a stock rebuild, but they arent gonna be the "best" parts. i know i could probably do it cheaper if i assembled it myself, but i dont have time and i dont trust myself in doing it.

having it done means i can have something to fall back on if something breaks(and its not my fault)

$700 is a fair deal if it's all done right and includes BRAND NEW rods/pistons/etc. I would expect Eagle Rods and KB Hyper pistons for $700.
I paid $1200 for my LONGblock, but it's just STOCK replacement parts, no name brand anything. (Except ARP fasteners throughout)
Eric, remember, after that $700, you'll be spending prolly another $2000 for heads/cam/intake.

I think I may be confused, ?

Eric said: " $700 for the engine + rebuild."

Do I understand this right;

700 for a engine (just to own a 350 engine)

+

then tearing down and rebuilding same engine with what ever parts required/desired / and + labor

Eric - - -Am I right with this ???

for the shortblock engine, yes that is correct. He already has an engine there that is ready to be torn down and rebuild just for me.

edit:
the $700 would be paying for the block, parts, and labor

This thread is becoming confusing on what you are actually getting here for $700.00. You can get a block for around $200 for a good unit that has been checked for cracked cylinders

I'm confused for sure. Of course it don't take much to confuse me.

Eric,

how about tomorrow, after you talk to the guy, get a list of what it is. Get it all in writing, piece for piece. Then you come back on here and tell us, what the hell it is you are paying 700 bucks for.

I think this is were some of the confusion is coming from. A "shortblock" is block, crank, rods, pistons and not much else. If this is what your getting, your getting ripped. I pd $1000 for a "longblock"...shortblock w/ flat tops, stock heads w/ z28 springs and collars, cam of my choice, all the covers, installed my intake and the core charge....all from a builder with a very good reputation.

I think everybody just wants to make sure you don't get ripped. Some of us have been down this road many times...

Then what was your initial post of:

Quote:
$700 for the engine + rebuild. Half now, half when its done.

this says to me: 700 for motor then +??$$$ for rebuilding it.

If you are saying now for 700.00
you get a short block w/ no heads -ok, I get it,

but now I would say- sounds a little cheap for a 450HP motor.
machine work and labor avg cost 500.00 +/- only leaves 200.00 for crank, rods, bearings, pistons, cam, timing chain, oil pump, gasket kit and the ARP bolts.

Let us know like swervin said, your list of parts and services.
