Was there a mesh screen in the dash speaker hole?

Just got my truck back from being painted and am in the process of reassembly. There is a screen, like a heavy duty screen door mesh, glued to the underside of the center dash speaker hole. Was this stock? It's pretty ratty looking so am not sure whether to replace it or just chuck it.

My 69 had some kind of cloth type mesh stuck to the dash and the original speaker had a similar mesh over it also.

Just use some black speaker cloth that's UV treated and glue it in place around the speaker grill . it keeps all the dust and dirt from accumulating in the speaker and makes it easy to clean .

It's a good idea to have something there to stop small things from falling down on to the speaker. Small things would bounce around on the vibrations and could wear a whole in it . My $.02 worth. Have a good one.

Re: Was there a mesh screen in the dash speaker hole?

Thanks guys, good info. Even though I won't have a speaker in the hole, seems like a smart idea to cover it anyway. Not really trying to make it perfect, but want to put it back together the right way. Grumpy, thanks for the Amazon link, that UV speaker fabric looks like the way to go, much better than what was in there before. Couple of pics of where it is now....
