327 question
Ok so I'm talking with a guy who runs derby cars and he has a 327 that he claims spins to 8,000 rpm and has 700 hp, full roller setup, vortex 208 ex 280 int heads, I'm not sure of the claimed torque numbers. He said it only runs for 20 minutes at a time, 30 max and never gets above 130°. Is this guy just trying to blow smoke or can a 327 actually pull off those kinds of numbers. I've never seen one that could pull over 500hp. Pictured is the motor

Since he has numbers ask for the dyno print out to back it up. No dyno...no proof, just blow'n smoke.

A more reasonable figure would be possibly 400-425 hp. I'm not sure you could get those numbers from a blown or turbocharged engine with the cubic inch limiting it. I am building a 327 for my 55 now, and maybe, I can squeeze 340 out of it?

Yeah. I am too. I was told before I built mine that the 327 is limiting and expensive to build. I have double into it than I would have in a 350 engine to get hopefully 330 to 350hp. But I wanted a 327.

The rpm is not out of spec for the right configuration, and 327 are pretty happy at that level.
A guy I used to know owned a dyno shop. A 327 can pull 500 hp NA, but it will not be on nodding terms with street ability. The one he was testing, and tuning laid down 535hp, and something like 340tq. Spun to 8500 rpm, and sounded like Satans chariot at idle. Though it was on note above 4500 rpm. I asked him about the specs, and he said huge. 12-1 compression, and a 600 lift solid roller cam. With the rockers where the stands bolt to the heads. Not the stud type SBC's have stock. vortec heads have a intake runner of 170 CC , no way they can put out that much power at those RPM's

I see a long water pump, small balancer with larger pulleys, and I don't see a dipstick on the driver side...........305 for sure!!

Yeah, Ford Blue trips my wire, too. See if you can get the stamped numbers/letters off the block. The 2 or 3 letter code will tell you the factory displacement.

He's wasting a phenomenal racing motor on derby where a stock engine could just as likely win. I don't know about his numbers, but a 327 has huge potential for the displacement. I know people throw around their 500hp figure like they used to throw around 300hp. I guess that will need to be increased here before too long. I don't know about 327s being so much more expensive to build or hard to get power from. I have one I easily and economically built at 325hp and it cost me $1,300
