Hey Andy, I have a question. I need to get a distributor for a 1970 Cadillac but I'm not sure what engine is in it. It's a big engine, are the distributors the same? (BTW, it's a DeVille)

Yeah, I found out that they were all 472's . I want to do an HEI conversion, does anyone make an HEI distributor for these?

K, I just found out that the part number for a distributor for a 472 and a 500 are the same. Does anyone know what year they started putting the HEI in Caddys? Also, does the Caddy HEI use an external coil or is it built into the cap?

What about Caddys? Looks like they stopped building the 472's and 500's in 71, is that right? Did 425's come with HEI? If so, will they swap into a 472? I'm stumped on this one. I've been messing with Chevys for 25 years, Chevy is all I know.

Yep, just got this from a block identification website: The Cadillac 500 and 472 engines were made from 1968 till 1976 (today has been a learning experience)

Randy,
The 472 was made from '68-'74. The 500 was made from '70-'76.
I believe HEI's were standard on all Caddys from '74 up. The only difference between the the 472 and the 500 was the crank and pistons.....blocks were all the same (except '68 & '69 472's had slightly smaller oil passages).
Are you looking for something aftermarket for a dizzy?.........performance? MSD makes a Pro-Billet (?) distributor for the big Cad.

You can stab the HEI directly in there, but be carefull on which way you point it, the belts will rub on it onless you put it in a certian position. (even then it'll be close.
If it is too close for your liking, you can get all the pullies off an HEI equipped 425/472/500.

Correct me if I'm wrong but, if the pulleys are going on a car with an A.I.R. pump, the "new" pulleys would have to be from an A.I.R. equipped car also, right?

Honestly, I have never considered an AIR pump to be reinstalled on anything I own, so I could not tell you.
Actually, I have never noticed a smog pump on one of these big blocks...I'm sure they installed some, but i have never seen one.
