67 GMC 1500 Project
Hi All!
I am very excited to be active on this website again and for the first time with a 67-72 truck! I have been on the 60-66 and 73-87 forums for years and now I get to join you all. So here we go. Today I traded my '06 GMC 4x4 for this little gem. It is a '67 GMC 1500 longbed. Factory 327 and a/c. It is a very clean original truck that was re-worked about 9 years ago with the following mods: power windows, power locks, 4 wheel disc brakes, drop spindles, and a black paint job. The guy I bought it from used it as this shop truck/advertisement board. It mostly sat out front his shop for years. He drove it a couple times a month. The 327 was removed last year after a misfire that couldn't be tuned out occured and a "freshened" up 350 with a mild cam was installed. At that time he also put in a 2600 stall torque converter, which I am not a fan of so far. It's not a very street friendly set-up currently and I will most likely change out the torque converter and cam this summer. Here are pics of what it looked like with the shop name on it. I buffed off the letters on the driver side today. I'll do the passenger side tomorrow. That was a lot of work!

Re: '67 Jimmy longbed project
So the truck is extremely clean for a mid-west truck. Honestly, I feel like it would be clean for a west coast truck!
There is a little bit of bubbling on the hood edge and the cab roof front corners, but other than that it is super straight and rust free. The cab corners and rockers were replaced when the paint was done 9 years ago. They did an OK job, but it was obvious it was done. The interior is really great, although the gauge bezel didn't survive well. but the cardboard under the dash and in the glove compartment survived very well! There is not rust behind the seats or under the dash. Very clean truck.

Re: '67 Jimmy longbed project
So here are some engine pics. I noticed immediately all the factory writing on the firewall. Anyone that knows what these markings mean please let me know!
Only light surface rust in the compartment. Fender well below battery is rusted out, but everything else is straight!

Re: '67 Jimmy longbed project
So here are my plans:
I will be towing my 12' 1954 Aloha camper with this truck so I need to ditch the step bumper and install a hidden hitch and roll pan like my old '60. I posted a pic below of my '60 with the camper which is the original truck I joined this website with a long time ago. I am not a huge fan of the wheels...I've never really liked the raked look with big n little tires. So if anyone wants them, let me know. Haha. I will probably end up running a set of rally's or turbine mags like I used to run on my '78. Or I might run steelies and poverty caps like I do with my van. I am going to raise the front end an inch or two I think. It is a little too low for me. Other than that, I want to get rid of the high stall converter and swap in a nice RV cam so I have good torque for towing. Later down the road, I'd like to put in a gear vendors. I ran one in my '78 and loved it! So that's about all I have to say right now. Been a great day. Let me know your thoughts and opinions. This site has been such a great place over the years to make new friends and enjoy everyone's projects. I look forward to many more years.

Re: '67 Jimmy longbed project
Got a couple shots with the camper mocked up behind the truck. Now that the shop lettering has been buffed out, I'm gonna have to buff the rest of the truck! I guess no more matte paint job. Oh well. I think a couple years down the road I will eventually repaint it it's original green color.

Very nice truck man. I don't know what shape your 2006 was in but one thing is for sure... the 67 will be gaining value instead of loosing it! What was the original color?

The original color appears to be a light metallic green. I'll try and get a pic of the roof in the cab, they left it green when they painted the truck black. I really like the green color.

Re: 67 GMC 1500 Project
Nice find! In my opinion the gloss black looks better than the satin anyway.

Re: 67 GMC 1500 Project
Well, I got the first round of buffing completed today; still need to go around again and finish getting the haze out. Found out while doing it that the front fenders and doors are repops. They just felt a little chintzy so I pulled a door panel and found the sticker. Oh well.
It appears just the hood, cab, and bed are the only original sheet metal. I also attached a pic of the original color in the cab. Does anyone know what color this is? Or have a paint chart for '67? It's like a silver/green color. Pretty nice color.

Re: 67 GMC 1500 Project
I'm thinking all the GMC 67's were painted that silver (fawn) color inside regardless of exterior color, so that may not be the original exterior color.
Color: Silver Fawn Poly = Ditzler 22858 Nice truck, Rg

Re: 67 GMC 1500 Project
Well I made a little progress today. I finished the buff and wax. Glad that's over.
So I couldn't quite get onboard with this blacked out grill. I looked at a bunch of pics online of other GMC's and I just wasn't feeling the all chrome look either. So I came up with this. I'm sure someone else has done this paint scheme before me, but I really like it. It's very similar to the 71-72 grills, but without the blacked out middle bar or fender and hood trim. What do you guys think?

Re: 67 GMC 1500 Project
Ahh, OK. I know the 60-66 GMC's did that, but I didn't't know that they continued that with the new body style. Makes sense.

Re: 67 GMC 1500 Project
Thanks guys!
Just did a little tune up today, adjusted timing, new plugs, set idle/air mix, reset idle. Running much smoother now. With this whole virus thing going on, I'm afraid to spend much money on it so I am just doing simple little things with stuff I have laying around. Probably won't make a lot of progress in the next month, but I'll post up pics if I change anything for the better. I hope everyone is staying safe with their families!

Re: 67 GMC 1500 Project
Wow, everything you have done is awesome!!!
Glad to see it has disc brakes!!! When you get ready for a torque converter change and cam swap, contact Cliff @ Cliffshighperformance.com He's THE Quadrajet expert. He tunes and works on all makes of vehicles, mostly GM and more specifically Pontiac's. He deals with a torque converter company and can have a torque converter custom built to what you need!!! Is your glove box decal still intact??? It may tell you the orogonal paint code... Carry on!!! |
