Headliner adhesive
I need some help, I’m trying to remove the factory headliner adhesive. I’ve tried goo gone and 3M adhesive remover and I am having no luck. The 3M adhesive remover was recommended and was told it was really good, no such luck.
Do any of you have any recommendations? I don’t want to grind on them and want to keep the original paint if at all possible. See attached photo. Thank you, Matt. |

Heat gun and a plastic scraper maybe? That should get most of it.

Be careful with the heat and keep it moving. Some guns can get hot enough to damage paint. But if the 3M doesn't work, I don't know of anything else that will.

That ancient adhesive needs heat to even hope to get it softened up enough to release without pulling paint. Lestoil works great once it's softened.

Just curious why you want to remove the glue?
Are you going to paint the inside of the roof? Or are you are going to put a headliner back in ?

While I have the original headliner and it’s in great condition, I like the headliner out of it. For some reason it gives it a more open feel. The vehicle is all original with original paint and it really good condition, so I want to leave it as is for as long as possible.

There are two types of 3M adhesive remover available that I know of, the useless stuff you can get here is CA, and the good stuff that has been outlawed here for environmental reasons. Just like denatured alcohol is not available anymore due to VOC restrictions. I had a bunch of leftover adhesive on the inside of the cab from somebody who must have previously tried to put in a vinyl interior. The CA compliant 3M product didn't make a dent in trying to remove the adhesive. Had to go to Oregon so bought the good stuff up there, much stronger, and probably what others are using in more reasonable parts of the country. It will rub the paint off though if you really go after it. Here's a pic of the two products:

The stuff in the red and white can is what I've used for years. I would guess that's the non-California stuff.

The print on the can on the right says it's designed to 'remove adhesive that has not fully cured'. I believe yours is well beyond fully cured.

Would one those rubber wheels that go on drill used for removing two side molding tape and graphics work? Just a thought.

SRU1436, I still have most of the can left, does not take much. If you're close to Sac feel free to come by and I'd be happy to give you some. It's pretty much a lifetime supply for me, which I don't think I'll be needing again in any kind of quantity.
