Aftermarket fuel gauge OHMS
I have a 01 2500HD that is my new tow pig/winter beater.
The previous owner installed 2 pods which both have voltage gauges in them currently. The cluster one did not read correct or something they said. I am pulling the entire junk cluster and going to run torque off a android tablet. I am going to put aftermarket oil and fuel into the pods that were used for voltage. I want to just pull the pins off the cluster connection and run that to a fuel gauge and if possible use the oil pin to reuse as much of this harness as I can. I am not sure which pins/wires that I will connect to the harness and more importantly I am not sure of the OHM rating that will work with the factory fuel sending unit on this truck. Figured I would ask before I end up with a "extra" 0-90 ohm gauge. Any help that you can provide will be appreciated.

Re: Aftermarket fuel gauge OHMS
I believe all of the T800 trucks instrument panels are digital using stepper motors to drive the needles... unlike the older rigs with air core analog gauges.
Most if not all of the gauges in the instrument cluster get their information from the PCM over the Class II serial link. The 2nd design T800 that started in 2003 had problems with the stepper motors in the gauges failing and cracking solder joints on the SMT resistors. There are bunches of videos on repairing them. I'm not sure about the 1st design 99-02 trucks. You can do lamp and gauge sweep tests using a Tech 2 to figure out whether the gauges and lamps are working then go from there. You can leave it plugged in. I would. Why do more work than you need to. Torque Pro and a decent quality Bluetooth CAN/OBD II adapter will let you use an Android tablet or phone to display custom gauges. You need to enable the extra GM PIDs. You can get PCM Voltage, Eng Temp, Eng Oil Pressure, Fuel Level, Trans Temp, Tach, Speedometer, and Odometer along with several other pieces of data displayed on a tablet or large phone. All of that data comes out over the J1962 OBD II datalink.

Re: Aftermarket fuel gauge OHMS
According to jeffscortlx if your 99-02 fuel gauge isn't working it's probably the sender.
He re-works gauge clusters for various dealerships for a living and knows what he's doing.

Re: Aftermarket fuel gauge OHMS
The fuel gauge and oil gauge both work on the cluster. But I do not have a computerized oil pressure reading with a 01. Think they changed it in 03 or 04 to where you can see oil pressure on a scan tool using the ecm.
I want to see more things then the stock cluster can provide like intake temps and timing. The only thing I can not see in the torque app is fuel level and oil. Oil is easy I can stab a sender in the hole and run a wire if need be. But the fuel lines on this are in good condition and I do not want to drop the tank. Anyone know the ohm rating? If it comes to it I will get some new stock fuel and oil steppers. But I would rather just plug in a gauge then build one.

Re: Aftermarket fuel gauge OHMS
If your cluster is working or part of it... it might be worth looking into a cell phone or tablet mount so you can have more screen realestate for the additional gauges not found in the stock cluster.
