Service Replacement Block

I have a 1972 GMC 2500 Sierra Grande. The serial number on the front of the block is CE464b84. On my SPID it says Model # CE25934

I think the "b" is a sloppy 6. My understanding is this would be a 1974 service block. Am I correct. The other thing is this engine is painted black was that normal or would that have been done by the owner?

Re: Service Replacement Block

CE is for Chevrolet Engine - warranty dealership replaced.
This site has info from 1968, but I think it might be applicable.

Re: Service Replacement Block

Just a note for awareness, the only engine info in the SPID Model # (or your VIN) is the "E" which indicates it was born with a V8. If an optional V8 (i.e. not a 307), it will also be listed on the SPID with an RPO number and cubic inch description and the truck would have come with engine callout emblems (8|350 or 8|400) under the front marker lights.

Re: Service Replacement Block

That is correct. My SPID says big block and that is what it has in it.

According to that site I read it as 1974 Service replacement built at the Tonawanda plant
