Louvered hood

I aquired this a couple months back. The guy had it punched in the 80's. Not sure how long he ran it, but it sat in his barn a number of years. Couldn't pass it up for $100. I think it's pretty cool. Now friends just look at me weird when I talk of fixing it and putting it on the stepside. What do you all think?

Re: Louvered hood

I like the louvered hoods a lot, but living in Washington State I think driving in the rain as much as we do they would make the engine compartment that much messier. Maybe Borden (no idea where/what that is) is different.

A couple of shots of my '67 Panel Truck hood. 2nd one is when I had the front clip off to install the LS1/4l60e. I will have to take a better picture of it.

I drive the truck every day in the summer and it has never been parked inside, summer or winter. I figure water dripping through the louvers isn't any different than pressure washing the engine compartment. Never seems to hurt it.

Re: Louvered hood

Had 208 louvers punched in a 68 Chevelle hood I had back in the late 80's in WA state. The car was black. I had a dirt driveway so everytime I started it up the dirt would get pushed by the fan through all the louvers and dust the top of the car. It was impossible to keep it clean!

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Louvered hood

I'm laughing at your friends! hee hee ha ha Hardy har har!!!

The only negative on louvered hoods is water going onto your pretty engine. It's a SoCal/AZ/NM/NV kinda thing. But these days nice trucks are stored inside and mostly driven in dry weather. Nothing gets hurt by it, just fouls up the pretty engine bay. A pan could be fabricated with water directed to drains direct to the ground. I have a louvered hood going on my '67. I plan to drive it all over. My practical sense says paint an alternate stock hood to switch on it seems necessary for a trip. But I may just fab a drain pain, which cancels out a lot of the whole venting aspect. But who needs louvers anyway? I just want to look at worthless stupid looking louvers in the hood of my hot rod truck driving it down the road!

I had a '56 VW Bug I put a '57-earlier convertible deck lid on. The bug had an oval window so the vent slots grew taller as they went out from the center. The '57-back conv lids have vertical vents, same size across the upper area. It gave it a real nasty snarygastor hot rod look. VW tack welded catch-alls with drain tubes, but more welds came loose than survived so I removed that stuff. You could look in and see the dual Webers and all. I just wiped the motor down a lot. Rain didn't seem to really come in unless parked, and I think the slope of the deck lid put the vent slots pretty much behind the engine. Not the same deal as our trucks, but that's what VW did to deal with water entering the engine compartment. That car was my year round daily driver. No performance issues came of that

Street rods and motorcycles run all day in the rain. No issues. If you have any issues from that you have some other problem and now you know you need to take care of that

Thumbs up Re: Louvered hood

I have drove mine plenty of times in the rain and I never had any issues with it. My truck was used as my daily for several years, it's seen it's share of rain.
