Clutch Pedal Tension Spring

Its been awhile since last time I had an issue that need ya'll input, I was driving earlier today and when I pressed the clutch pedal I heard this snap and ding, after inspecting it I saw the tension spring broke. See pics for details
Few questions I have:
1. Is there like a generic spring I can get at my local hardware store?
2. Where does the broken end go into?
3. Is it safe to drive with it for the time being until i get the spring, as do to all this social distancing and curbside pick ups its kind of hard to browse through a hardware store.

Any spring will work as long as it returns the brake arm so as not to have pressure on the release bearing. If you can't get one local try Bills Trucks down in Courtise On. Good luck.

You should keep the pedal up some how to keep the weighted pressure off the system. Just for the weekend i'd be tying a rope on it and holding it in the cab. That's me though doesn't mean it's right. Have a safe weekend eh.

The thing is the pedal returns to the rubber stopper no problem, it just now it feels like has less tension but the pedal returns no problem without it.

Re: Clutch Pedal Tension Spring

Your go to go from what I see if that's the case. I think Bill is open Sat. mornings and he would CanPar it to you. For that little spring it's not worth the drive. Good luck.

If the brake lights go out when you release the pedal, you're good to go until you get a spring. I'm a bit surprised that the pedal returns to the stop without the spring. How much free pedal do you have on the brakes?

Its not the brake pedal its the clutch pedal and now I have probably about an inch of free play before it engages it and it returns it back no problem as well.

Re: Clutch Pedal Tension Spring

If memory serves, the OEM clutch return spring is MUCH more substantial than the spring in the pic. Looks to have been replaced. Not known for failing, so should be able to find a used one from somebody who has converted to automatic.

Re: Clutch Pedal Tension Spring

It's the Brake pedal return spring , brings the pedal back to engage the brake light switch shown in this picture the clutch pedal rides inside the shaft and doesn't have any type of switch .

It's pretty easy to see that the spring in his picture is attached to the top of the clutch pedal, not the brake pedal. The other end of the spring fits into a tab on the side of the pedal bracket up by the firewall. (see pictures) It's a finger pincher so be sure and wear a good pair of leather gloves when trying to install it.

It won't hurt to drive it that way, there should be a lighter spring on the clutch linkage down below that holds the throwout bearing away from the clutch pressure plate fingers. (last picture) I would replace it as soon as you can though.

Re: Clutch Pedal Tension Spring

You can definatly get away for a time without it. I have to stick a toe under mine from time to time and pop it off the floor board. I have seen plenty of trucks with bungee cords under the dash from my days working in a junkyard. The classic spring is pretty good. I put one in my truck. Now I just need to repair a zbar to fix my issue. Its been cut and sloppy so the linkage will rub on a header tube and hang up on occasion.

Thank you for pointing it out where to hook it to the frame. I was looking for it and could not figure it out for the life of me.
