Cargo Light Bulb?

The cargo light bulb burned out in my '72. When I changed it out, the thing twisted off and I damaged the old bulb. No big deal except taht i cannot identify the bulb. What's strange is the bulb has two contacts on the base and a single element. The socket also has two contacts. Does anyone know why this is? This is a factory cargo light.

I'd appreciate it greatly! Why does it have two contacts and one filament?

The reason for two contacts is they use the orange and white wires from the dome light circuit, and the orange one is hot all the time and the white completes the ground. Other wise you would feed back into your dome light.

Not necessarily true, the light bulbs that illuminate the a/c heater controls have only 1 positive contact.

HAH a lightbulb with 1contact !! how is the electrical circuit completed??? there MUST!!!! be a positve and a negative contact for illumination !!!!!!!!!!!! there's no such thing as a light bulb with 1contact go back to basic electricity class !!!!!!!!!!!

Isn't the outer case the other contact/ground? I think he meant there is only one hot contact.

Anyone make a brighter light for a cargo light? Like a halogen or something??

The reason it has two contacts on the base and one filiment, is it does not use the brass base for a ground as most bulbs do

Last basic electricity class was in high school but I retained some knowledge. So using your logic all lightbulbs have 3 contacts? Geez, don't get your panties in a wad. I guess I should have clarified myself, not all lightbulbs have 2 contacts on the bottom of the bulb

Check your backup bulb in your truck--1156--1 contact--grounds thru brass. ( last class was in 1954 at UT-go Vols)

Right but only one contact on bottom unlike a 1142 which has two on bottom which does not ground thru case. (electricity 101)

yes true some light bulbs have more than 2contacts like the mentioned dual filament 1142 that has 2contacts for the filaments and a3rd contact where it grounds thru the case
what's getting confused by those unfamilar with electricity is that i stated A LIGHT BULB MUST HAVE 2CONTACTS and yes it can have more like the 1142 with three or the flouresents or headlights but a light dont work with 1contact NEVER

1142 has one filament and 2 contacts on bottom. Does not ground thru case. It works like John says. We all know that you have to have a complete circuit to ground. I have wired many street rods and machines from scratch including fuse panel. Was not trying to put you down-just having a little fun.

Yeah, Not trying to make you look bad cdowns, I just pointed out something that I saw that seemed incorrect. We're basically saying the same thing but wording it different. BTW I am very familiar with basic electrical properties. I wired my shop and my 71 Chevy and have done many electrical repairs to my home. Even have to wire in proximity switches, photo eyes and numatic solenoids from time to time in my line of work.
