72 no power at distributor
i swaped a 72 c10 with a 350 on to my 72 k10 frame that has a big block and now the distributor doesn't have 12 v all the emission equipment was intact if i put a jumper wire in the switch thats connected to vacuum on the intake will that complete the circuit and make it fire cause the only way i can make it run is to hook direct to the battery to power the distributor

Re: 72 no power at distributor
What distributor?? stock distributor needs the yellow wire at the starter hooked up to the R terminal along with the resistor wire coming from the bulkhead connector.

Re: 72 no power at distributor
i bought the truck the cab come from it had a 350 with hei in and it ran yellow wire hooked to dist it had some emission thing on the pass side of the intake manifold hooked to vacuum lines with a two prong harness one side of the harness had two wires coming off one terminal i'm thinking if i put a jumper wire in this plug i would probably get power to yellow wire just wanting see if anyone had to do this before

Re: 72 no power at distributor
No. The yellow wire comes from the "R" terminal on the starter. That emissions equipment is the TCS solenoid. That said, what LockDoc said is what to do.

It should also have power when the ignition switch is on. That's why it is called "IGN UNFUSED". LockDoc

Re: 72 no power at distributor
its just a gm hei it runs fine if a take the battery terminal on dist directly to battery this truck run fine. before i swapped the body onto this frame it ran fine everything worked but after the swap when i hooked the distributor to the wire that ran the old hei on the 350 that came in the truck it would fire while cranking then die i've got something going on in the wiring cause the parking lights are on dim all the time i've cleaned up the ground straps i'm not sure where to start if i had the wires switched around on the starter solenoid could it act like this maybe

HEI distributors don't receive power via the starter solenoid.. A purple wire that originates at the ignition switch (start terminal) and passes through the Neutral Safety Switch carries power to activate the starter.. The purple wire is connected to the small terminal labeled "S" located nearest the engine block .. Nothing connects to the other small terminal.. If you have a yellow wire and resistor wire (cloth insulation) connected to the "outboard" solenoid terminal labeled "R", both those wires can be disconnected and removed from the harness.. There are a few different methods to get power to the HEI.. The resistor wire and small gauge yellow wire used to supply power to a points type distributor won't work for HEI distributors. The method I use involves installing a 12 ga. wire in the firewall connector where the resistor wire was connected.. Connect the new wire to the "Batt" terminal on the HEI.. If you don't have other problems with the ignition system, the engine should now start and run.. |
