Wheel choice opinions

If you are going for more of a stock white steel wheel look and narrower tires do you think a 15x8 rim would look good, or would you go for a narrower wheel?

Im talking stock height and no caps. I have enough of the 15x8 steel wheels for a complete set and a spare. I have none of the narrower wheels.

I personally don't like skinny tires/wheels, save for winter use. I Like the look of some big 'ol fat tires. But that's me, some like the skinny look. But offroading want a fat tire. Yeah get better gas mileage with skinnies, but we have trucks, not Prius's. My 96 Yukon is lifted 4" and has old school 8" rally's with 33s. Rims need to be blasted and painted, but still looks good IMO.

I get that you like that look. I like it too, and all of my previous trucks have had the bigger tires, wheels, and lifted.

Now I want to try something different. I dont give a rip about gas mileage, and comparing a vintage 4x4 to a Prius because the 4x4 has more of a stock look to me is hardly apples to apples.

I have a couple of sets of wide vintage mag wheels, a set of the ralleys like you have, 10 15x8 6 lug steel wheels, and a couple of sets of four inch lift leafs. I have a lot of choices, but this time I want to try something different.

I would look for 6.5” wide wheels for skinnies personally, but the 8’s will work fine they just won’t look quite as skinny at the bead. I can definitely appreciate this look, that’s pretty much how they came off the assembly line.

I like the look of widened stock wheels. For 6 lug, like the military Blazers used. Essentially an 8" stock wheel, accepts stock hub caps. If I wasn't going 8 lug Id get a set. Even going 8 lug, I might get a set, using stock 8 lug caps off 88-ups, love the look. If they only made 17x10s, Interco has 35" blems cheap, would look good and be cheaper than buying any other brand 35s....

Depends ... mud or sand, sure. But rocks - well, sometimes it's better to drive around or between instead of over. There sure were a lot of narrow tired jeeps on the high narrow mountain roads in Colorado back when fat tires weren't "cool" yet.

I saw a YT video a while back where they were recovering a Wrangler that rolled hundreds of feet down a mountainside. There was absolutely no reason for it; the big wide tires forced them right over the edge of a perfectly decent but quite narrow road that was originally built for 2-way mule traffic.

Not all cases for fat tires. It all depends on terrain. Mud, sand, even snow, want a fat tire to dissipate weight. If there is a hard packed bottom or light fluffy snow then a skinny will work better.

The "fat tires" on pickups back in the 1970s were about the same width as the more or less standard 265/70r17 of today

I had 7.50-16 on my K/20 and they did fine except for getting stuck in mud a lot. The tall narrow tires sure helped with clearance and approach/breakover/departure angles just with a stock suspension. I went up on roads where my inside tire was rubbing the sidewall and the outside tire was hanging partway over the edge. It was about 1500' straight down on the outside!

I run 235's on an 8" wide wheel. Think they look good. Thing is they are 17's. Had a hard time finding a narrow tall tire in the 15" wheel size.

Are those what’s on your truck in the build thread? I’m looking to do tall skinnies on my 67, and like you, finding tire options for less than 17” wheels is thin. Or expensive!

WRD..i have (10x33) 255/85r16 bfgs on mine..tall and skinny...you didn't mention if you have 15 or 16 rims...
