01 6.0 Broke oil dipstick tube

Well today just wasnt my day. Finally got my old crack right exhaust manifold off. But not before i broke the oil dipstick tube. And one of the quick disconnects for my heater hose.

Got another manifold back on. Fixed the quick disconnect. Noticed the tube broke flush with the block.

So i pull the starter. Which ends up breaking also. So now theres 3 things broke. Finsihed pulling the starter to get in there to try using an ease out to get the tube out. Well not luck there.

The tube is stuck in there. Not sure what other options i have before i either drop the feont diff and the oil pan. Or get really pissed and just pull the motor.

Anyone have any ideas before i go to extremes to just get a small peice of tube out of the block?

Have you tried using an easy out? They’re normally for broken bolts and screws, but since the tube already has a hole, the easy out may work.

Re: 01 6.0 Broke oil dipstick tube

Ive used an ease out. I used a tap. The is rusted in place. I used a lag bolt to give that a try also. With no luck.

But now i have more issues. The smaller part of the tube broke off under the portion that is stuck to the block. So now i get to drop the front diff. To drop the oil pan to take out the portion that broke and dropped into the pan. This truck has giving me nothing but problems.

Im close to the end with this motor. Almost tempted to drop my 5.3 into it. Atleast i know i didnt have any issues with that motor. Only reason i parked it was due to a bad frame.

Re: 01 6.0 Broke oil dipstick tube

The 5.3 is noticeably less HP and torque.
It's a lot more work to swap the engine than fix the broken dipstick tube.

Is the 6.0 giving you problems other than the manifolds and the dipstick?

Re: 01 6.0 Broke oil dipstick tube

Sorry for the delay on responding.

Ended up going back to work and have had very little time to work on the truck.

To answer your question. I was having a bad miss after i drove the truck and got it up to operating temp. Since my last post. I have installed a new starter. Replaced the intake gaskets. Valley and intake. Replaced the valve cover gaskets. Every gasket was wore out and leaking or just pretty my bad. I have to replace the plugs again due to fouling them out when i went to start it. But thats minor.

I ended up getting the stuck peice of tubing loose. But it ended up dropping into the pan as well. Ive talked with several folks who have had the same issue. And was told to just let it be. It wont hurt anything being in the pan.

I do plan on doing an oil change and maye seeing if anything comes out. If not. No worries i guess. But the truck is back together. And running. Just missing due to plugs. So new plugs and start driving it again. Next issue to fix will be the oil pump soon.

Re: 01 6.0 Broke oil dipstick tube

Just seeing this post, ran into the same issue on my '02 Yukon XL 6.0L a few years ago. I ended up using a lag bolt threaded into the broken dipstick tube and clamped a vice grip near the bolt head. Then used a long punch and hammer to tap on the vice grip to get the tube out. It took a few different tries but finally got it.

Re: 01 6.0 Broke oil dipstick tube

I had a 5.3 in a tahoe I had to unbolt the engine mounts, remove the fan and anything that wouldn't let the engine not raise up, drop the pan, and drive the rest of the dipstick through the block. There wasn't anything to grab onto above the block and nothing would grab it inside like a lag bolt etc.
