'72 Mirror won't stick
So, for the last 2 years, I haven't been able to keep my mirror glued to the windshield very long. The previous 20 years, I think I had to glue it on maybe twice. I've used several of the different glue kits like Permatex, but those lasted 2 months at best. It was a hassle, so I just kept some super glue in the truck which did no better. Ran out of that and tried Gorilla glue. about the same.
Yes, I clean the button AND the glass before hand. Yes, I use tape to hold it in place. I've done it at night and in the middle of the day. It will fall off during the day while at work, while driving, and even overnight. What gives? It's like that part of the windshield has just quit letting anything stick to it for very long. Thoughts?

Re: '72 Mirror won't stick
I've cut the Gorilla double sided tape to fit the outline of what I am sticking and have had great results with it.

Re: '72 Mirror won't stick
The adhesive glass shops have is more durable. They'll often glue them on for free (I always did).

Re: '72 Mirror won't stick
Have used the part stores glue with good results. Only suggestions I would have are to clean glass with #0000 steel wool then isopropyl alcohol. Wait at least 24 hours before mounting mirror to button. Have never had good luck with the plastic buttons. Hope yours is metal.

Re: '72 Mirror won't stick
Can you use a 70' mirror? Mine gets mounted on the windshield header, not the windshield.
If not, you can etch the glass for better adhesion. You can get the acid etch from any place that sells stained glass supplies. I've used it in the past and works great. |

Re: '72 Mirror won't stick
Rough up the surface of the mirror button. Clean both surfaces very well. Use the activator on both glass and mirror button. Make a 8 with the glue on bracket and hold it in place for 30 seconds. You should feel it solidify on glass(keep it straight). Wait 24hrs to hang mirror. If that doesn’t work take it to a glass shop. Usually free-maybe slip em a $5. Good luck!

Re: '72 Mirror won't stick
I like the idea of etching the glass.
the suction cup looks viable too. How was that done? I've thought about a '70 mirror, but kinda like that little space freed up for magnetic stuff.

Re: '72 Mirror won't stick
So since then, the mirror has come off probably 3 or 4 time. Fell off again yesterday. So today, I cleaned the window with Windex, then Alcohol. Button too, after sanding it to be sure all previous glue was off (metal button, BTW). The auto part store had some Permatex stuff for $11, and this for $7, but this says EXTREME STRENGTH. We’ll see.

Re: '72 Mirror won't stick
I tried 3 brands, a couple twice. Went to the local glass shop. Not free though. But worth it to have a rear view I am not afraid to adjust.

Re: '72 Mirror won't stick
so far, so good. I really think weather has something to do with it. As things cool, I expect it to fall off again soon...

Re: '72 Mirror won't stick
So that was just over a year; fell off yesterday. I put it back up with Krazy brand glue I had around the house. The button had all the glue on it; nothing stayed on the glass.

Re: '72 Mirror won't stick
After mine fell off the third time....that's exactly what I did....
Several people stated "that's not correct for a 72" to which I replied "you've obviously mistaken me for someone who give a sh!t"...

Mine hasn't fallen off since I bolted it on, plus it has the green cover to match my interior

Re: '72 Mirror won't stick
Hit the mirror tab with some sand paper, then try it again. When i worked at a glass shop we used the loctite brand. it was great!

Re: '72 Mirror won't stick
Well, the Krazy Glue didn't last long, a few days. I tried some double-sided tape I had laying around: it was good waterproof stuff. The adhesive worked but the foamy black substrate did not. I got some JB Weld Mirror Weld, trying that. Also picked up a different button; it's plastic but has a much bigger contact area for the glass. will try that next.

Re: '72 Mirror won't stick
Fell off today, it’s been 7-1/2 months. Trying that plastic button kit now.
