Fixing non-working windshield wipers....

Going to get into fixing the windshield wipers that haven't worked since I bought my 1968 C10 a couple months ago. Looked at a few past threads and I figure I have a plan of attack on troubleshooting it but I have two questions-

1. Should a 68 have a one or two speed wipers? Or were both options?

2. Do I have to remove anything under the dash to get to the motor and the wiring attached to it?

1. They are two speed wipers with non-depressed park.

2 . Maybe if you have A/C, otherwise you shouldn't have to remove anything under the dash. You will have to remove the wiper blades & cowl vent to remove the clip on the wiper arm.

Check the simple stuff first. Fuses, etc. Next i would check that your switch is getting good ground to the dash. NOTE> the wipers are always powered and when you turn the switch it provides the ground.

In my experience the problem is usually not the motor.

With the key on check for power at the motor. If you have power then ground the out the ground wire at the motor. If the motor works, ground out the the ground wire at the switch. If the motor works check to see if the switch has a ground.

I'd invest in one of these, https://www.classicparts.com/1968-Sh...ctinfo/04-026/ My 72 manual says if the parking brake assembly is located on the vertical surface of the cowl front panel, (directly below the wiper motor) you must remove the parking brake assembly attaching bolts (4) to allow shifting of the assembly rearwards to allow access for removal of the wiper motor. You can use a cotter pin removal tool or a large dental pic with a 90 degree bend on the end to reach through the cowling to remove the wiper motor drive rod retainer, the wiper drive rods slip off the shaft. The left defroster vent duct will have to move, it's a slip fit. Disconnect the washer hoses and electrical connections, then remove the motor...

I got lucky. Fuse holder (not even the actual fuse) was corroded and covered in Arizona dirt/sand. Cleaned it up and boom it works. I will say I don’t notice any discernible difference between low and high speed (tested on a dry windshield), but that seems to be a common complaint with these trucks.

Nice. If I remember right there only a small variance in my C10. My C20 the same, but it's a bit tired and sometimes needs a boost just to get started to begin with

Yeah there’s a couple “weaknesses on these wiper setups. One Is there’s not much difference in the two speeds, The other is getting and keeping the washer pumping, so it will spray onto the windshield.
Fix 1: there’s a vendor that makes a delay switch that can be hooked into the stock switch.
Fix 2: put an upgraded pump from an S-10 in (there’s many threads on this)
Or Fix 3:“Force Prime” the pump and run washer tubing up the underside of the wipers to get a better spray.
I did the the #3 and it works quite well

Glad you got it going.Try some penetrating oil on the linkage under the cowl.That can make quite the difference on the wiper speed.
