Pinion angle variance on a '66
My tranny is at 5 degrees down and my diff is 4 degrees up. The smallest shim available seems to be 2 degrees. Do I even have a problem? Reason I even ask is that the U joint in my tranny yoke has worn into a "glitchy" tight spot after only about a thousand miles. The glitch is where it normally rides in the yoke while driving and is only on the caps in the yoke side. The tube side caps are smooth as new.

The 1 degree difference should not be an issue. I do not know why you are having an issue with your u-joint . Is the u-joint greaseable?

Re: Pinion angle variance on a '66
Thanks Captain, it is greasable and I did grease it prior to installation but since I recently had it rebuilt and shortened at a shop I was going to just run it back to them this week and see what they say. Sometimes greasing those things results in grease oozing profusely out the shoulders of one or two caps and it leading you to think it's good to go but perhaps the grease was just following the path of least resistance and the yoke caps were left needing more. In any case I'll follow up and let you know what they find.

I'd also think it wouldnt be a issue..even though that's more angle than I'd want...the issue may be the ujoint itself...make sure it's a good quality...I've seen the cheap stuff wear out quickly..

Can you shim up the back of the trans? One more question, what is the drive shaft angle? The relationship between the three is whats important.

Re: Pinion angle variance on a '66
I did try shimming the transmission but it was a bust. I still use the cast iron bell housing which sits in a v shaped (or sloped) mount and raising the housing even a little causes the bolt holes to miss the mark. That's the trouble with the v shape I suppose. If it were a tailshaft mount I'd be set. I will check the driveshaft angle and let you know when the shop gets it back to me. The driveline guy's first impression was that I twisted the U joint loops a bit on the yoke end of the tube. I believe that's quite possible since I have a Muncie with a 2.98 first gear and 3.08 rear gears with 27" tires....and well....how can you avoid slamming a Muncie through the gears
