starter spins sometimes

My 454ci starter started to spin sometimes instead of catching? This just started this week after the engine overheated. I installed an Edelbrock 38gpm electric fuel pump to relieve the vapor lock conditions and then the starter problem popped up.

What could it be?

PS: Installing the pump close to the underbed tank and routing the fuel line up the firewall to the carb works for me. Now it starts at first crank and no more priming the carb (Edelbrock 1407).

Re: starter spins sometimes

Most likely your starter drive just chose this time to start going out. Kind of like the customer who fussed that I had replaced bushings and ball joints in his front end and aligned it and now the radio doesn't work and expected it to be repaired for free.

They aren't hard to change an you could change the bushings and brushes at the same time and have a fresh starter ready for a lot more miles.

Re: starter spins sometimes

Thanks for the reply. I replaced the starter and that took care of the problem.
