steering gear help
Hello all,
Will the steering gear from an 87 r10 bolt up to and work on a 74 K20 frame? Thanks, Chip |

Re: steering gear help
It should, the main differences will be that the later unit will likely be a quick ratio box(not a bad thing) and also the later box will have metric power steering hose fittings, that’s easy to overcome though.

Re: steering gear help
I had a major brain fart on this one, It just hit me that the R is the 2wd and V is 4x4 if I’m not mistaken. If you’ve got a 2wd box it will not work with a K series truck because the pitman arm moves side to side as opposed to forward and back. I apologize for missing the boat on this one.

Re: steering gear help
Something new learned. 87 R10 2wd, last year of the square body's. You could use it with a crossover steering conversion.

Re: steering gear help
Ok then if it’s from a 4x4 truck my original post stands!

Re: steering gear help
thanks again! I've been searching part numbers and have come to the conclusion that it will fit and the number differences probably have to do with the metric connections. I am swapping the eng/trans/ tc, fuel tanks and associated stuff as much as I can from the 87 into the 74 k20. keeping it a 3/4 ton. its a long story that I'll so a build thread someday to explain it all
