Torque Converter Question

I am running a 350 4 bolt main with a Mild Comp Cam, Holley 630 carb and headers. 4.56 gear with 37.5 Tires. I am going to install a 700R4 transmission I obtained and it came with a Torque converter that has a 3500-3700 stall. Will this be too much for my 350 and generate a lot of heat? Trying to do this on a budget, any recommendations would be appreciated.

It would help if you had the actual cam specs for someone to give you a good recommendation. I would suggest calling a couple of the convertor companies and get feedback from them so that you have their input.

In my limited knowledge of the issue, you will not want to use the convertor you have that came with the transmission.

Like all these builds that take time I have to find the cam specs as the cam was put in 12 years ago! I've got it somewhere just have to locate it! HA HA
if I keep up at this rate I may have the trans in about 2025!

The cam specs are 210/218 @.050 447/462 111lsa

Running that converter is guaranteed you will overheat the transmission fluid. I didn't do the math on your setup , but I estimate you will be around 2000 RPM in overdrive at 60 miles per hour. that converter will be slipping like crazy and the lockup is not strong enough to hold it. You have an excellent setup otherwise, as far as the cam, gear ratio and tire height. Just get a stock converter.

edit; @ 60 MPH your engine RPM will be just above 1700 RPM

There is no need for anything other than a stock converter with that small cam.

Did you remove the lock up or leave it in?

With your tires 1800-2000 towing converter would be about right. The heavy tires resist moving, and a tighter converter maybe needed to get rolling.

Says who? A good converter with a billet cover, Billet TCC piston/friction isn't cheap......But WILL hold a lot of HP/TQ.

A stock 245mm cover & TCC piston/friction meant for a 60° V6/I4 application can burn up behind a stock V8!

I don't recall the OP saying anything about having a high dollar billet converter. do you?
I don't give a crap how good of a converter he gets, but expecting a 3500+ stall converter to work properly at 1700 RPM is going to work. Says me.

da fuq does that have to do with the lockup clutch holding the power being inputed?

Obviously this TC won't work in this application, but any v8 convertor lockup should hold this level of power just fine without malfunction. We're talking a very mild 350 level of power, so basically what every convertor ever put in a truck with a v8 is dealing with.

I wasn't arguing the fact a 3500 stall is a poor choice for the application. You specifically stated the lock up clutch will not hold??

If this is a 245mm core with a adaptor ring or even worse....Those welded on tabs that extend out the converter bolt spacing to fit 10.75/11.50 pattern flexplates.....That is JUNK.

Hybrid converters aren't much better, They use a 298mm cover & clutch with a 245mm Pump/Turbine/Stator. They flex like mad & have a tendency to balloon even with a anti-balloon plate.

Have not touched the transmission, its just the way I received it, going to tear it down to change the output shaft for my Transfer case. It appears to have been rebuilt.

have no clue about the lock up being removed, how can I tell?

SO SO glad to have the master back . You know what you are talkin about , and thats all that counts. If they do not want to take your knowledge so be it.
