Help to remove fan extension????
Hey guys, I am replacing my stock radiator and replacing with a Champion aluminum with twin 14" electric fans. In order to get enough clearance, I need to remove the current fan blade from the water pump pulley assembly. Once I removed the fan, I cannot figure out how to remove the 2" metal extension (See photo) from the black upper pulley. It does spin around but does not come apart. I dont want to take a hammer to it so I thought I get some real expert advice here on the forum. I'm thinking that I need to remove the pulley from the water pump shaft and then maybe there is a screw or something that holds the two pieces together from the inside???? Anyone know?

If you tap on it with a plastic hammer it should break loose. It is just stuck on the end of the water pump shaft. There are no bolts or screws other than the bolts that hold the fan & spacer on. LockDoc

The pic is pretty low resolution, but it looks like you have studs on the pulley as opposed to bolts. Just like Leon said, give it a few love taps with a hammer and it'll probably come off. The pull it straight out towards the front of the vehicle.

Re: Help to remove fan extension????
You can also double nut the stud tighten them up with two wrenches and back out the studs then tap lightly with a hammer to remove the fan extension

Re: Help to remove fan extension????
Thanks everyone for input. As long as I know it separates, I will give it a try this weekend.

Re: Help to remove fan extension????
Does anyone know the torque spec for the 4 bolts that hold the pulley to the water pump shaft? I have the Chilton manual that seems to have every other troque spec but cannot seem to find these.

Re: Help to remove fan extension????
Google “torque values” pick a chart. It will tell you the torque according to the size and grade bolt you are using.

Re: Help to remove fan extension????
Better yet, your Chilton manual will have those torque values in the beginning of the book as well. If they don't give a specific torque value, you're expected to reference those charts.

Here is a link to a chart listing factory torque values...
http://www.348-409.com/torquesm.html I know the page url lists 348-409, but it is for SBC... Fan to pulley is 15 FT LBS....

Thanks for the "torque value" reference but now I'm confused??? I used a Fastenal torque chart since I bought replacement bolts from them. Using a 5/16 -24 bolt (grade 8), I see a torque value of 177 ft lbs. So Im assuming I can torque these bolts up to a maximum of 177 ft lbs. That said, what is the torque level I should tighten these bolts when installing the pulley to the water pump shaft? Any torque up to 177 ft lbs???? Thanks.

Re: Help to remove fan extension????
Pretty sure that should be INCH pounds for a 5/16-18 thread.

Re: Help to remove fan extension????
Yea, I agree with the Inch pounds vs Foot pounds. You torque that bolt that much and I would bet you that thing is going to snap like a twig. Not an expert, but I just don't see needing that much torque for those bolts.

Re: Help to remove fan extension????
Maybe I am missing the torque specs for the water pump pulley fan blade in my Service manual???? I have looked on every page in the rear section under ""specifications". Attached are the pages where I believe it should be listed, but.... is there another area in the manual I should look?
Anyone help where I can find the torque spec for the fan blade 4 bolts in the water pump pulley?

Re: Help to remove fan extension????
.
About one ugga-dugga. Just make sure it's tight. Use lock washers if you want or even some loctite. Don't think I've ever used a torque wrench on those bolts. Hth, -klb

Re: Help to remove fan extension????
18 ft lbs coarse thread 5/16
20 ft lbs fine thread 5/16 But as stated above, never torqued those bolts. Lock washer and 3/8 drive ratchet. Good to go.
