Correct Fasteners for 67-68 Grille Center Support

A previous owner of my truck cut the center horizontal bar out of the grille and zip-tied a portion of a 71-72 grille in its place. I am in the process of returning it back to stock. The two smaller fasteners that attach the grille to the center support under the latch are missing. It looks like 1/4 or #14 screws would fit through the holes, and I'm assuming clip nuts need to be installed on the grille. I'd like to get as close to stock as I can. What size and type of fastener was on there originally?

U or J-nuts on the grille support for sure. I used black hex head screws.

The problem with U or J-nuts is that the bend in the grille where the nut would go is too short for a standard J-nut. There must have been a very short clip on there originally. I guess I will trim down. A U-nut.

The J-nut goes on the center support.

That seems super awkward for accessing the screws. Are you sure that's the way it was from the factory?

Since it says quantity 6 needed, those u-nuts are probably larger (5/16) for along the bottom edge of the grille, although there are actually only four used, as the outer two are welded on nuts.
