Do I need a new HEI for Tach Connection?
My 72 C10 350/TH350 came with a HEI Distributor from the previous owner but I don't know the make or model to research it. Far as I know it works perfectly fine. Only number is "W11 14" stamped on it. Photos attached.
There doesn't seem to be a connection for a Tach - do I need to buy a new [better?] unit? Or am I missing something with this setup? Thinking the worst I am looking at this on Speedway.com MSD 8362 Street Fire Chevy V8 GM HEI Distributor $177 and then a pigtail for 12v and Tach for $13. Which is pretty much the max I want to go. I am not keen of pulling a HEI from the junk yard... I am not looking for crazy performance if I need a new one, I am keeping the truck more or less stock (no racing / perhaps a daily driver). Going to suck when I get my truck back from my engine/trans rebuild and I have no place to connect my new Tach Kit to that I've ordered from GMC Paul's!

There is a external Coil ... can the Tach connect to the Negative post??

Re: Do I need a new HEI for Tach Connection?
Not sure who makes them but here’s one.
https://www.hotrodpartssupply.com/pr...ibutor-red-cap You could try the standard hook your tach to the neg post on your coil but I’m not sure if it will work. Do you have room for the bigger coil in cap hei? You could go pertronix in a stock points distributor if you want the original look. Rebuilt ones are cheap. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/a...QaAhu0EALw_wcB Or get one like this. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/p...oaAjEiEALw_wcB |

Re: Do I need a new HEI for Tach Connection?
That does look like mine, other than the Red Cap. I am pretty sure I'll have space for a MSD 8362 Street Fire (Speedway says it fits) and I assume that is what you mean by "bigger coil in cap hei". I believe I read only K trucks having issues with fit.
That summit racing url is just to a points distributor ... not inclined to mod it to pertronix. My brother and buddy feel the "negative coil" connection will work. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I guess it would be a HRP-67011 K Chevy electronic distributor black cap

Re: Do I need a new HEI for Tach Connection?
I linked this one too.
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/p...oaAjEiEALw_wcB I’d use it before I used anything with Msd name on it. There quality has gone way down hill. That Msd is the same as this cheaper one. https://www.speedwaymotors.com/HEI-D...0aAi4OEALw_wcB There was a comparison between the Msd and the speedway one and only difference was price. Exact same parts in both. |

Re: Do I need a new HEI for Tach Connection?
Thank you about the tip about "MSD" - I think I might have read that elsewhere on a thread or two. Might have been something else too - there are a zillion Distributor options!
I think this Distributor in my C10 is just electronic distributor? Perhaps called a Direct Ignition System, or DIS?? Or perhaps what is called a "Breakerless ignition system"? Would that be more or less like the PerTronix Flame-Thrower Stock Look Cast Distributors D104600? I've read you hook of the Tachometer like if it was a points Distributor and if so that would go where? On the coil Negative?

Re: Do I need a new HEI for Tach Connection?
okay, I emailed them. I also emailed hotrodpartssupply.com too! Thanks for your advise/help/urls!
The more and more I try to find/read, I believe it's just a connection to the negative of the coil. Figures, I bought the HEI wire from GMC Paul's.... With that said, I think I'll have better luck going with the PerTronix Flame-Thrower D104600. They seem to have been around a bit and likely to stick around. Plus I can get the PerTronix Flame-Thrower D104600 on Amazon Prime - cheaper (and no shipping charge with prime). I also really like the "stock" look of them too.

Re: Do I need a new HEI for Tach Connection?
I believe I have figured out the details on this unit.
Top Street Performance (TSP) Model 6701BK-F-602K-CHROME-CWI or BPP-6701BK-F-802K-BK45K-CWI or ??? The previous owner bought it as a kit off ebay (wires, coil, and GM Ready-To-Run / Small HEI Replacement Distributor). Same as late GM HEI’s except you run an external coil instead of In-cap coil. Similar ebay sellers blockperformanceparts theswapmeetparts Maybe the replacement module from TSP READY TO RUN DISTRIBUTOR REPLACEMENT IGNITION MODULE Part Number: JM6932 Confirmed it is JM6701 from Top Street Performance (TSP) but the one on the Website is Red/Male connectors. Part Number 6932 for the Module Part number JM6927 Black for the Coil
