Is there a market for 63-66 front crossmembers?
I called No Limit yesterday to place an order for a wide ride IFS and some rear suspension goodies for the 64 that I'm building with my son. It's down to the bare frame, waiting on shiny parts to arrive. We pulled the front crossmember with everything suspension/steering/brakes/etc. still attached. Since I'm replacing the whole thing, I started wondering if is worth saving? Yeah, they are greasy and ugly, but not rusted and I'd hate to scrap it if it would be useful at some point. Just trying to decide if it is junk, or if it deserves a spot in my shop. Thanks!

I'm not trying to sell it, or asking what it's worth... just wondering if it is worth saving it, or if I'm better off just scrapping it. I didn't feel like my question even toed the line on the for sale policies, but I apologize if I'm out of line for asking it.

I could be wrong, but I wouldn't think there would be any interest except for free; in that most can buy a 73+ crossmember for $100 or less and those have discs. In other words, if I needed a crossmember, I'd just get a 73+ one.

I hadn’t even considered that the 73+ crossmembers will fit. Now I’m wondering how to scrap the thing. Am I better off at a junkyard or at a metal recycler? There’s a big metal recycling outfit in Statesville, NC maybe I’ll give them a call.

A classic junkyard will give you next to nothing if at all. A metal recycler will give you the going rate for scrap steel. Right now it's about $30/ton, or $.015/lb. Either way, you're not likely to recover to gas it took to get there unless you have a lot more stuff than just the front crossmember or unless you live next door.

Too bad your so far away. I've been needing something like that for temporary use. I need to make a roller out of an old straight axle rig with no front suspension. Right now it sists on boat trailer wheels in front but those wont load up on a car trailer too well.

Re: Is there a market for 63-66 front crossmembers?
If someone was doing an OEM restoration it would mean something to someone and obviously needed it or parts from it.
I hate to scrap original parts unless there is no other alternative. If you are giving it away, I would list it in the Pay it Forward thread on here or on Craigslist for $50 then if someone is interested you could donate it to them... I guess that is why I still have a radiator support in my backyard...I don't need it, but don't want to toss it...hmmm |

Re: Is there a market for 63-66 front crossmembers?
I've been on this forum for 10 years, I've never seen anyone wanting to buy a 60's front crossmember.
I guess if the drums were nice and someone's were ruined.

Re: Is there a market for 63-66 front crossmembers?
Thanks for all the input guys. I may drop it on the pay it forward thread, or I may just scrap it. My new shop is only 1200 sq ft (I know... "only". I was in a 2 car garage for the last decade), and I'd rather free up the space that it's taking. I didn't want to scrap it if it is useful to someone, but at least then it will get melted down and turned into something else. Guess I should have built a bigger shop... then I wouldn't care!
