Parking brake doesn't work

The parking brake on my 84 Sierra 2500 doesnt work. The cable underneath seems awful loose, and the pedal only springs back to the up position. What do I need to do to make it work?

Re: Parking brake doesn't work

I pull on the handle, and release, and it goes back to the original position. It's not binding. Its as the the pedal itself is missing something that "locks" it in the down position.

Pull the drums off and inspect the hardware to make sure everything is correct first and that the cable inside the drum is retracting/springing back. Make sure the shoes are adjusted correctly before adjusting the cable. Work your way forward

Re: Parking brake doesn't work

There is supposed to be a spring that pulls the release handle back in. If that is missing or stretched a bit, the release handle may not be catching the pedal. It doesn't take much movement toward the driver on the release handle to release/not catch the pedal ratchet.

Manually push in on the release handle while foot pushing the pedal. If it now catches, replace that small spring.

Re: Parking brake doesn't work

Interested to see what you find as my 79 is doing basically the same thing. When my dad had his tranmission rebuilt they unhooked the emergency brake and did not hook it back up, that was 15 years ago. I pulled emergency brake pedal forward and it just falls back down again. I don't think adjusting brake adjuster under truck will tack up enough slack. The adjuster is rusted and threads need a tap over it. Where is a place you can buy a new adjuster for under the car. Anyway if you can update on what you find that would be great
