What to do about area around gas cap.
Hi guys,
This is for a 68 panel truck. I will be replacing the rear quarter panels with patch panels but I don't think the patch panels will cover the area near the gas cap. I'll have a better idea when I have everything. I'm slowly getting the parts to do this but I don't know what to do about the gas cap area. I ordered the patch panel for the area behind the driver door, wheel arch, lower quarter and tail light area patch. I want to keep it in the stock location (not looking to move the cap) and stock looking so I guess I'll need to find an original panel with the gas cap area that's in good shape? Does anyone know what years and models will work? I'm assuming a Suburban would work but what years? Same question for the rear marker lens holes. What year sheet metal will work 68 to ??? Can I use pickup truck sheet metal for the lens area ? I need to find a panel with a hole to mount the lens.

What did you use for the gas tank filler area? What about the marker light area? I need to replace those holes.

Suburbans are the same in that area. Find someone like me that parts them out on a regular basis . Shipping can get expensive but it is still possible to find larger original sections

Yes, I've been watching the "for sale" section for that section. Would you know what years would work? I would think 68 to ??? Thanks for your help?

Re: What to do about area around gas cap.
Send me your email address and I will show you what I have. 67-72 suburban and 67-70 panel are all the same in that area to my knowledge

Re: What to do about area around gas cap.
Have you considered scavenging a filler and door from a donor vehicle? I think most people would never even know a filler door wasn't stock. It would be a good look with the rest of the sides of the panel being smooth too.

Re: What to do about area around gas cap.
I used a fuel door from a 1990 S-10 2" fill....Cut about 18" x 18" out of the donor then trimmed as needed. Inset with Pneumatic flanging tool.

Re: What to do about area around gas cap.
I always found it odd that GM went back with an exposed filler neck, and the 1955-66 had a fuel door.

Re: What to do about area around gas cap.
Yes, I am considering using a door with a remote handle to pop it open if I can't find a good original. It would be much easier, any junkyard would have one from a late model truck or car. I'd like to keep it looking stock if possible.

Re: What to do about area around gas cap.
Looks good! Flanging tool can even make curves.

Re: What to do about area around gas cap.
Flanging tool was modified by me to make it slightly deeper, also I probably rounded over 1 edge.

Re: What to do about area around gas cap.
Thanks for your suggestion. I was lucky today and found a good used panel.

Re: What to do about area around gas cap.
thanks ... my patina was extra thin in the gas cap area so it had to be replaced anyway and figured this would be different ... also decided to add charging to the other side
