Disk brake conversion

Was wondering who has done a front drum to disk brake conversion.
I have a 70 cst/10 LB, 6 lug I have looked a brake kits that run anywhere from $600 and up.
Is there a particular year model that I could go to the wreaking yard and pull, to get the conversion. Or by the time I spend to getting necessary parts would it just be cheaper to bite the bullet and by on-line.

Any Thoughts?
Thanks

Re: Disk brake conversion

I swapped in a front cross member in from a 74 C-10 direct swap or just do a spindle swap and your done . BUUUUT the rear end will still be 6 lug ,70 had a narrower rear than the newer ones plus they went to leaf springs and yours is a coil . You will need to swap that around allso or just use axles but it will be 3/4" narrower on each side.

Re: Disk brake conversion

I understand 70 was a year where they might have the wider diff or narrow diff depending on stock on the build line

They do make retro spindles to fit your 70 tie rods and ball joints

You can get 5 bolt axles for either width diff

6 bolt rotors are an option as well

Here is a thread showing the various options on how to do a conversion

Hey neighbor. I used to live in Arlington too. Now I’m about 80 miles east.

Re: Disk brake conversion

If you want to keep the 6-lug hubs.
Look at Scarebird.com
They have a kit for $190.
I’ve not heard anything bad about them.
There are other kits out there, and they CAN get quite pricey.
It’s all about what kinda money you have, and how much you use the truck.
Me personally, I can’t justify to cost, for how much I use my truck.
The next time my brake shoes are worn out, I’m gonna go ahead and do the conversion.
I found out about Scarebird about a month after I did a complete brake system replacement (shoes, cylinders lines, and cables), so I’m not going to take parts off that have a lot of life left, just to say I have disc brakes

Re: Disk brake conversion

just did the conversion in my 70 chev 1/2 ton , bought the kit from truck n car shop for the 6 lug and came with everything under 900 , its a cpp kit so you may be able to find cheaper , for thanksgiving though they do have 10% off , if your upper and lower ball joints have not been changed now is the time to do them, i had mine done a couple years back so just reused , and i also went with new tie rod assemblies for both sides
